Does anyone go out of their way to 'bag' trig points?

I love reaching a trig after a (lung busting) hike. If it's hidden or hard to reach then all the better.

Pic for reference of what I am talking about.

  • Hope this is the correct forum.

They were used by Ordnance Survey to measure distances between two points. Mostly found on the highest points in an area across the UK.

The attraction for me is it takes a bit of effort to get to them.

There’s quite a few in my local area, I have visited most of them located within ten miles of my house. The next one is another three miles out, so it’s a hilly marathon there and back. Maybe when the weather is warmer next spring.

I'm a surveyor, so... yes. hehe

Sometimes professionally, sometimes just for fun.

Good spotting, sure is!

My previous boss was an old-school surveyor who didn't spend money on new gear until the old stuff died... that Topcon was a few years old when I started working for him and still going when he retired 12 years later.

I still have my old 400 series. Must be 20 years old now! Like Trigger's Broom (excuse the pun!)

Interesting to see the trigs from other countries.
I tracked down a destroyed trig point called Parsons Pulpit at the weekend in the Yorkshire Dales.
Randomly a rock a couple of steps from the original site had the ordnance survey marker on.
