Not seen another thread, so having read the news about Stokes and then looked at the squad, I started to think it looks quite strong. And I hadn't even been drinking!

How long will it be before all hope is dashed?

Until we lose our top 3 for 20 in the first innings!

I'm confident. Jimmy, Broad, Wood & Robinson is a good attack over there & as long as Root does a Cook & gets 800 odd runs in the series we'll be fine!

Outside of Root and Stokes our batting line up looks suspect. No doubt a few will stand up and be counted, but too often we collapse and get skittled out for a handful of runs.

Hameed could be a good shout as opener, its people like Bess, Crawley im not sure about.

Our batting line up remains fragile, mostly due to an excess of T20.

Root, despite being one of the best batsmen ever to play the game, just isn't a test match winning captain.

I’m not. Broad and Anderson both struggle to be as effective in Australia with the Kookaburra ball…like a fine wine Jimmy gets better with every year but this will could be a hard tour for both of them by their high standards. Robinson with his height could be England’s best bowler, Wood you just have to be worried about his ability to play a test match as regularly as is required. Only having him as a 90 mph bowler is an issue. Maybe Overton or Woakes (perhaps England’s most underrated player) can do the business.

Stokes going is a massive plus a) because he’s a world class No5 but also b) because it means we will potentially be able to play a spin bowler.

We desperately need the Top 3 to get decent starts so Root and Stokes aren’t coming in to repair the damage. Looks like Bairstow, Malan, Crawley, Pope and Lawrence are competing for two places No 3 and No 6.

I’m glad all the players are going because even with this team it will be very tough…the Aussie attack is a level above what we have in their home conditions.

Anyone want to get on the next Aussie test captain? Aaron Finch. You heard it here first.

More likely to be Pat Cummings the current vice captain.

Why do young people and in Paine's case not so young think sending dick pics is a good idea

Oh yeah, I hope your guys are ready for the ginger step child treatment

I'm fully expecting us to get a spanking. We're very very good at the one day and T20 game, but we've learnt that at the expense of real cricket.

Anyone know the broadcast details on TV ? Seems to me it's BT - I'm hoping Sky have at least a highlights package.

I have read that the BBC have the TV highlights package, but I can't find any mention of it on their own website.

It was only recently I clocked that it was on BT, which was a surprise. Doesn't matter as I do have BT sport, but just took me by surprise that Sky won't have it for the first time in a while.

That said, as much as I love cricket I rarely bother with watching highlights, so unless I'm watching it live (given time zones that won't be a lot) then I'll no doubt just catch up with the latest disappointments on the BBC website every morning.

As above, BT have live TV coverage of every game via BT Sport and BBC will run live commentary on R5 Xtra as well as text commentary via the BBC Sport website.

BBC also won the rights for the TV highlights package but no timings have been confirmed as yet.

On the cusp now...

My prediction: The Aussie's established batting line up with prove the difference.

....yeah not exactly and outlandish prediction I know spin

Glad the first test is a 'stay upper' rather than an early alarm job though.

I feel I ask this on every down under Ashes and have yet to find a satisfactory solution.

I wake up at 6:30 every morning, Ideally I would like to be able to make a cup of tea first thing and then leisurely scroll through the match from the start run by run, wicket by wicket.

There must be a way surely?

BT have had the rights to Australian cricket for the last 4-5 years which included the last Ashes tour Down Under.

Interestingly Sky have won back the rights to Big Bash and will be showing that till at least 2025.

I think England may struggle here. Australia are better in pretty much every department, plus they are at home.

On the upside there is very little pressure or weight of expectation on England, and interestingly very little talking up of the home teams chances by the usual suspects, which might mean they are not quite as confident as usual.

The day night test(s) will be fun too.

I’m a bit annoyed about the Sky Sports Cricket thing I think Sky are going to get it when my deal is up next month.
