Off to Scotland and want to get my daughter up a few hills with me. Was looking at getting one of the hiking kid carrier packs to get her in the back shes 17 months. Has anyone had one or any reccomendations? I suspect if I get it wrong its going to be unbearably painful laughlaugh

We have an unused Montis Hoover going (amongst a few no longer needed bits) if any good to you? (Like this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/MONTIS-HOOVER-First-Class... - only grey/black/red).

Never got used because our youngest wasn't keen going in it - sat in it once and that was that smile (Others we know did have much greater success with these things...I suspect we weren't quite as keen on the hiking bit to persevere biggrin).

The Jack Wolfskin ones are good. Don’t set your expectations too high as to how far you can go. Some kids love it and sleep, some kids hate being in them. If it’s the latter then you’ll have had enough after 10mins and want to go home. If it’s the former then it’s a good idea to spend money on it as most of the cheaper ones are uncomfortable after an hour.

I have one of these and do a lot of hiking. Highly recommended. My lot are too big for it now though.

Actually if you're in the north west I'll sell you mine for £75 tongue out It's in great condition.

I had a Littlelife S3 I think it was from Go Outdoors. I had been looking at the Deuter ones but the Littlelife ones were lighter, cheaper and just as well made.

Kids loved it, used to walk all over the place with them in it, chatting away. Not being constrained by where a pushchair can go was a gamechanger for us. There's a real knack to getting them safely on to your back, have to kind of kneel on one knee next to the carrier, get one strap on then stand up at the same time as getting your other arm in.

I paid around £125 for mine and sold it 3 years later for £75 so would defo consider 2nd hand as you won't lose much.

We found that it's critical to get all the straps adjusted right, so I wouldn't let any one else use it once I'd dialled it in for me. Really annoying getting kiddie strapped in then finding out you can't get your arms in as you're picking it up as someone much smaller has changed all the straps around.

Most of the weight is carried on your hips so I didn't find it too tiring to carry but you have to be aware of ending up carrying everyone else's stuff in the bottom of the carrier as the weight soon adds up.

Where are you based? I'm in cheshire, got to be worth a go second hand worst case I can use it for a weekend and sell it on again can't i.

The idea of being able to go on some walks through places where I cant currently take the push chair is the key bit for me. She loves being outside in her buggy and looking around so I am hoping this will help.

Darwen, near Blackburn.

Yeah I always liked it for exactly that reason, prams are a right hassle as soon as you get off a pavement.

Get yourself to a local “sling library” to try some stuff out. Baby wearing is becoming more popular and you don’t need to spend loads on a baby bjorn (they’re crap btw) or other bulky contraption . We wrapped our twins (sometimes both at the same time) in a simple canvas wrap until about age 4.

Another vote for the Deuter Kid Comfort. I’ve carried ours around all day in it before now. Just be aware that as a bag it’s rather useless and can’t hold much aside from spud, who should be quite comfortable.

I have the Osprey Poco, its seen 2 kids, hundreds of miles of walking and a few mountain summits. Ive just used it with my 3 year old up a munro in Scotland today. Can recommend its use (although by 3, you'll be looking at ways to phase it out!) Suspect it'll be the last year of use for us. Its well used, a little bit worn in areas but still fully functional and comfortable for miles.
