A much needed shot in the arm for cricket?
or
A cheesy attempt to popularise cricket, ultimately doomed to failure?
Somewhere in between I’d say. I’ve watched plenty of the men’s matches on TV, but don’t really follow the results. In fact my teenage son has watched more than me, but he even he doesn’t bother with the women’s games. There seems to be a good atmosphere at the grounds. Obviously it’s not that different to T20, but does anyone understand the time cut off thing?
One other point, the Michael Vaughan / Phill Tuffnell commentary combo on the BBC matches is awful. Even with the advert breaks, I’d rather watch the Sky coverage.

I went to one of the matches live last week. Observations in no particular order:One other point, the Michael Vaughan / Phill Tuffnell commentary combo on the BBC matches is awful. Even with the advert breaks, I’d rather watch the Sky coverage.
Lots of teenagers in the crowd.
Good atmosphere.
Arcane set of rules.
Sense of dumbing down.
A DJ playing snippets.
Avid avoidance of "Sweet Caroline" or any T20 motiffs.
Half time a random and wholly unsuitable live singer, wailing ballads.
The whole appearance of the event looking like the contents of the recycling bin.
Very well attended.
Excellent match.
My issue with it is that I don't really identify with made up franchises. I probably should, because I live 5 miles from the Ageas Bowl, home of Southern Brave, and I have been there to support Hampshire. But Southern Brave's squad includes Garton, Archer, Mills and Jordan who are all Sussex players. In addition there are players from Somerset, Surrey, Worcs, Warks and Lancs too. Then there's foreign imports, but I suppose that's nothing new in English cricket.
Perhaps it needs a few more seasons, but currently it feels a bit random and, dare I say, pointless.

I see your point.Perhaps it needs a few more seasons, but currently it feels a bit random and, dare I say, pointless.
I find myself constantly calculating how many runs per over they need by dividing balls left to bowl by 6. It's difficult to break a life-long habit.
The r.p.o. isn't even shown on graphics, which in themselves are ghastly. it's all the cricket equivalent of a Simon Cowell production.

"Teams" like this need time to build a support base, especially when the players are widely sourced and with no allegiance to the area.
I enjoy the game, less so the graphics.
Anything which gets more kids interested in cricket is a good thing IMO

BBC coverage is always better than Skys. Tuffers and Vaughan are excellent on TMS as well. One other point, the Michael Vaughan / Phill Tuffnell commentary combo on the BBC matches is awful. Even with the advert breaks, I’d rather watch the Sky coverage.
I think the cut off time is a ensure speed of play, can’t remember the penalty though.
I’m really enjoying though, and it’s a fantastic way to get families and kids involved.

Penalty is one more fielder in the inner ring and not on the boundary.I think the cut off time is a ensure speed of play, can’t remember the penalty though.

Long way to go to match the quality and intensity of the IPL.
Agree but the IPL has been going since 2008 and now has the clout to attract the best players from around the world. If the Hundred can get more kids involved in cricket then thats only a good thing.
Only issue I can see if they have have squeezed the schedules and this means 4day county cricket is played even less.
I'm the opposite of Brave Fart - a Sussex fan who would have to go all the way to Rose Bowl to watch 'our' players in a team I have no affinity to. I really don't care for made up teams and haven't watched a ball of it. The cricket will be good no doubt - it is still cricket after all. My concerns are it will destroy the county game in this country and KP has already mentioned we should move to 'franchise red ball' cricket. That didn't take long and feels like the aim of the ECB. As much as I love cricket I cannot bring myself to support the competition even though we now need it to succeed given the tens of millions invested in it.
For those that have watched it, has the cricket been noticeably better than the Blast? It is basically filled with the same players and it looks like one of the teams has been useless. All I see on BBC Sport is that every game is 'thrilling' and Morgan said the quality would be infinitely better which begs the question why one of the sides is stuffed already.
Also it really winds me up that so many of the England players never play for their counties to not 'overwork' them yet are made available for this tournament. If England get blown away for less than 150 this week it will be the fault of the counties not producing good enough players yet no first class cricket is played in the summer months, another reason why we are useless against spin. The same counties which produced the England C team which also smashed Pakistan in an ODI series! The quality is there but the calendar is wrong.
I'd most likely get accused of being an old fart who doesn't embrace change on the twittersphere. I'm 30! My overriding feeling is this could have been achieved on 25% of the budget by just promoting and tweaking the Blast and KSL and getting it on FTA. Bit of extra cash to each county to sign another overseas star and job done.
To come full circle I am slightly optimistic at the fight shown by a bunch of teenagers playing the majority of games at Sussex this season! And in fairness if the new comp gets kids involved, great. Whether the crowds end up being the usual T20 Blast followers remains to be seen.

I am enjoying watching live cricket, don't have Sky Sports but can watch on Sky Sports mix. To me this format all seems a bit pointless, what is wrong with 20/20? The only good thing about this format and the way the tournament is played, is promotion of the women's game.
Oh and I agree about the on screen graphics, it's like watching a ZX Spectrum game ...and just as slow to update!

I’d rather have a sexfest with all the members of the GB “news” team than watch any cricket, ever.hemidom said:

I do agree with some of your points. Alot of the things the hundred has brought it i would have thought could be done in T20 Blast. You already have the teams, schedule of games. Just change some of the rules on the field placements, mixing the overs to allow bowlers to bowl 6 or 12 balls, etc. For those that have watched it, has the cricket been noticeably better than the Blast? It is basically filled with the same players and it looks like one of the teams has been useless. You could easily allow those changes to attract families and young kids during the summer holidays.
I've really enjoyed it. It's not bothered me that players for one team have been moved to other teams and if anything it's really made it quite interesting to see some players play against lads they've trained with for many years but never actually played against. It's good quality and the women's game has been good too.

We have tickets for Sat at the Ageas Bowl. Should be a good game with the top 2 teams facing each other. Fingers crossed the rain stays away
