Sad news announced today of the death of darts player Andy "The Viking" Fordham at the age of 59.

Seemed like a decent bloke; had his demons with drink and lost an absolute shedload of weight before putting a lot of it back on again. Won the World Championship in 2004 and made it back after his health issues....

Just read about his death. I had assumed he was older than 59 but given his health issues its not a surprise.
Some great memories of him winning the BDO title

He was a genuinely lovely man who I met many times on the school run (my wife and his daughter are friends). A sad loss to those close to him, especially his family and grandchildren who obviously adored him.

RIP Viking.

A short anecdote: when his granddaughter and my daughter moved up to year 3 at school, their new teacher, a big darts fan, became a little star struck when Andy did the school run one day. Teacher asked if he would come in and talk to the kids about his darting career.

Andy’s reply was along the lines of “I’d love to, but I was pissed through most of it so don’t remember much”

I’m sure he wasn’t exaggerating either!

Thanks for the link GolverMart. A sad tale but I'm glad he had the success that he did.
