Grumble about the massive cost hike over the last 5 years!

2017 I was buying Saucony Omni (admittedly old season) at ~£60 from sportsshoes.com ~£65 in today's prices according to BOE

2021 it's hard to find an equivalent serious shoe below ~£100, days of buying last season's shoes for a sensible price seem long gone

Are the manufacturers and retailers just much better at managing inventory and retail pricing these days ... are we paying more for a superior product and more ethical manufacturing chain ... or what? (especially interested if someone here has industry insight into this!)

Yeah its nuts isnt it. Lots of money to be made from runners, its a huge industry. My first pair of running shoes were asics and cost me £30.

On the other hand, I was paying £50 a pair for Asics and Nike back in the late 1980s

Same here
Always paid £50+ since the 1980s
Now Nike Pegasus 37 (in dodgy colours!) are under £75 via Nike. Far superior to shoes in previous decades.

I presume the same reason you can't buy bike components, covid had increased demand and therefore no incentive to reduce the prices.

Supply & demand?

Maybe when "life returns to normal" ie no lockdown & pubs open there will be a tonne of barely worn running shoes hitting the markethehe
