Oh blimey...there goes an absolute Gent and a brilliant commentator. The voice of my whole interest in watching golf from being an early teen.
I remember when Jack Nicklaus won the Masters at the age of 46, his son was caddying....Alliss made the comment...’Aaah the old pocket money’s safe for another year’....
RIP

I didn’t think he did the image of golf much good for the last 20 years, but that’s the fault of the people who hired him.
But he did have a wonderful voice, knew what he was talking about, and seemed a nice old man. RIP.
I agree. But he did have a wonderful voice, knew what he was talking about, and seemed a nice old man. RIP.
All is was a fine commentator with a deep knowledge of the game. He was up there with Murray Walker, David Coleman, John Motson & Richie Benaud as the voices of sport we all grew up with, but he probably should have retired a long time ago. Golf is a sport which desperately needs to be dragged into the 21st century, and Allis was definitely part of its image problem.

I met him a few times - a true gent, and someone I could listen to for hours.
He'd agreed to be the guest speaker at a charity lunch I help organise. It was scheduled for the start of last month but, because of the Covid restrictions, we had to cancel.
We happily pay speakers to attend our function - in the past, we've had the likes of Dennis Taylor, Matt Le Tissier, Graham Poll, Phil Tufnell, Barry McGuigan.
When Peter discovered our event was for a charity, he offered his services completely free of charge. Such a generous gesture,
It's a great shame we didn't get to hear him speak, but a far greater shame to the world of golf that he's gone. A proper 'one-off' - they'll never be another like him.
RIP big man.

I loved his commentary, he often cut through the deference and fawning some commentators deal in and was quick and witty, had some lovely ways of describing shots/clubs and positions, I recall him calling a 5 wood a gentleman's persuader.
His comments on watching DeChambeau on the tee addressing the ball like a crazed animal at the masters were hilarious.
