Book some lessons if you can.
Don't splash a fortune on kit straight away.
Driving ranges are good with someone supporting oryou know what you are doing. Otherwise you entrench bad habits.
It's massively difficult
It's massively rewarding
It's fun

Yes, 100%.

Cheap seconds hand clubs from somewhere like Golfbidder and a few lessons from a pro will get you on the right path.

Winter is a great time to start. Get used to hitting the ball, then go out on a course in spring and have fun!

Lessons first and foremost. it will pay in the long run before you develop any bad habits. Half a dozen lessons with a pro will give you a good grounding and plenty of practice on what it being taught. Use the local driving range for this. If you feel the games for you then get a reasonable set of clubs nothing too expensive. Once you are at least proficient in hitting the ball roughly where you meant to then hit the course and enjoy. You will find it harder once you are on the course but dont get disheartened its a great game for exercise and fresh air and almost all of golfers are a good bunch. Take some time to get a basic grounding of the rules too, you would be amazed at some of them lol.
Good Luck with it.

There is a huge difference between being able to tap your way around a course and being any good at golf. Lessons are a must, lots of driving range and then lots of playing - there’s no substitute for regular practice, knowing which club to use and where the balls going to end up etc only really happens on the course.

It’s very easy to get disheartened, but a good way of getting extra exercise if you can commit to playing at least weekly. I don’t have the time for it at the moment, but my retirement plan is very much golf based!

Buy a copy of the Daily Mail and a Jag?

Sorry, still bitter about being refused membership of a golf club 30 years ago!

Whereabout are you based? World of golf in new Malden offer some free 'lessons' which should help with basics (grip, swing). After that would recommend some one to one lessons and practice!
