I am buying a set of clubs for my son - who is interested in taking up golf. I play, but am unfamiliar with woods beyond 5, 3 and driver.

I've bid on a reasonable set of Yonex irons on Ebay which are a full set apart from a 4 iron - possibly no bad thing as he's a beginner.

But what would be an alternative to a 4 iron would you say? A 7 wood?

Thanks. smile

Better asking in the Golf thread, but I would say hybrid. Loads of options.

A hybrid is likely to be more suitable than a 7 wood.

Have a look at '4 Rescue'.

I play off single figures and, for years, had a 7 wood.

Replaced it with a hybrid when they first came out and it was a revelation - so easy to hit, and from just about any lie.

It's one of the most used clubs in my bag.

When I was living In India, I used to ditch the 3 and 4 irons and put a 7 & 9 wood in the bag, especially during the monsoon periods, where ball roll was somewhat hampered.
