England selectors announce an unchanged squad for the upcoming Test against Pakistan.

Anyone surprised given the first match is played at Old Trafford and I would expect them to go with the same 11, who trounced WI this week, in this game?

Might ring the changes for the 2nd and 3rd matches down here in Hants depending on the result next week though, and the weather?

It wont be the same XI if Stokes can bowl. I’d expect Crawley will come back in if he’s fit.

Pretty sure they won’t be dropping S Broad esq !

Makes sense to add another batsman and play Stokes as a bowler/bat (assuming he is fully recovered?) and put him in at 5. Who do you drop though? Bess didn't get a lot of bowling last time although you are left without a dedicated spinner but maybe on this wicket seam will again dominate? I certainly wouldn't want to lose Woakes from the side but there may be a case to rest Archer and bring him in for the 2nd and 3rd games along with Bess at Soton where a spinner may have more impact and rest Anderson or Broad.

However, both Broad and Anderson must surely be nailed on for selection in the 1st match at Old Trafford?

England unchanged due to Stokes not proven fit to bowl so potentially a problem being a batsman light but Pak having won the toss and electing to bat first may be crucial. Bold move given the conditions?

We'll see if they were right by the end of play today.

I didn't like the last team and I haven't changed my mind. Stokes is a great player, but should be batting five or six not four. I back Buttler, but he really, really needs to score in these games otherwise I think he is going out.

Hoping for a great contest !

Nothing much happening for Broad and Anderson, which does surprise me given the overhead conditions, so is it a containing strategy for the rest of today rotating all five bowlers? Would Root risk giving Stokes a couple of overs to see if he can break this partnership?

Pakistan are looking comfortable and, it would appear, made the right decision to bat so what total would they like on this strip?

Don't think Stokes will bowl at all in this test. Hence the line up. Pitch looks like a 5 day pitch. Not sure England are going to like batting last on this against the spinners.

Good toss to win, thought we bowled a little short again today, old habits...

Post rain break session coming up so let's see if the damned Dukes ball will swing!

I agree that Root won't want to risk injury to Stokes today, but I can imagine a case this time tomorrow with Pak going along to amass a large target that Stokes will be in the Captains ear to give him a few overs, or will England see this first Test as a trial run to see what the opposition has to offer, given they have best of five this time.

I really hope we will be thinking long term with future team selection!

Still cannot see why we are not playing Foakes behind the stumps.

Butler as much as i like him is not the best of glovemen & he's just missed a huge chance.

No need it's raining again!

Where is our local reporter from Lancs to give us a regular weather update and forecast?

I actually think Buttler could bat four but not keep. But it needs Stokes fit as a fifth bowler. He is a very decent keeper, but not the best keeper in England.

I fully get why Butler is chosen for the job but i'm still a firm believer that the best man with the gloves should be behind the stumps.

I guess Adam Gilchrist really changed the way wicket keepers are these days selected.

Butler missed a huge Stumping today & it really could be a costly mistake. i just want
the best keeper keeping .
