Hi all

I’ve taken up golf, and got some lessons coming up. I’d like to buy myself some clubs, and I’m aware practicing technique is far more important than expensive clubs at this stage - that being said, I don’t want to spend on something rubbish (heard some stories about cheap Dunlop clubs ends flying off!)

Don’t want to spend loads but don’t know what’s alright and what’s not really... full set preferred ready for when I’m able to use them all properly!

Any advice/links appreciated

I went for a fazer half set from American golf. Probably not the best value but I didn’t want to go second hand and spend hours researching... they seem fine but I don’t really know what I’m doing enough to have a proper opinion! Try and get a bag with a stand if you can.

Have a look on old bidder. You don’t state a budget but you should be able to get a driver a se of irons and a putter for about 200quid. And buying on there you have some reassurance that they won’t be junk.

Find a cheap set of cavity backs from a car boot or similar to get you through a bit of initial coaching, Forget woods (for now). Depending how fast you progress, once you have a little consistency in your swing & ball striking go buy a decent set from a good pro-shop.

I've got a full set of Golden Bears (Jack Nicklaus' brand) and a bag/caddy, only used them a few times, you could have them for a song if you were close.

This ^^^

I'm assuming predictive text mess up, this is where you want to go https://www.golfbidder.co.uk/

They sell secondhand clubs, but inspect them before sale to ensure good condition and that they're genuine. You'd be amazed, but people make fake golf clubs, so Ebay can be a minefield.

I've bought a few sets from there for relatives and had great service. A set of cavity backed Callaway would be a great start. I'd go for an older set of decent clubs than a newer set of cheaper clubs personally.

Another vote for golf bidder you should do ok on there,

the package sets ain't great, ive nearly replaced all mine with decent 2nd hand clubs. i should of done this first time round to be honest but we live and learn. I have some Callaway X20 irons now and they are sound.

I was in American Golf the other day and saw they had some nice used iron sets. May be worth going somewhere local to you if you know they have some and test some out.

Look for a set of Ping G (G15,20,25,30 - whatever your budget allows!).

This man speaks sense. Whatever you pay for those clubs, you'll get similar back when you sell if you want to upgrade / stop playing. If you buy a 'starter' set for say £200/£250 - you'll be lucky to get £50 back IME (ask me how i know, ha!)

Golfbidder as mentioned is great to shop. Plenty to choose from & infinitely better than any starter set you can get anywhere.

Get your lessons in first, your pro will be able to find a useful used set that will match your ability.

Good luck with the game!

Based on the irons I've used over the years I highly recommend the Wilson D100 irons.

I've still got my original set and it's laughable how forgiving they are.

You can buy a second hand set on eBay for well under £100.

Another benefit of golf bidder is their seven day trial.

Definitely. You can’t go wrong with a set of Ping G10, G15 etc etc.

If you’re around average height a set of black dot (standard lie angle) with regular flex shafts will be great to get you going. Like Rosscow says, you’ll lose little to no money when you move them on.

The older models are every bit as good as the newer ones. Golf companies are snake oil salesmen. They promise the latest and greatest innovations with new clubs. It’s all BS. Find a set rated 7/10 on goldbidder, or a set in good nick on eBay and you’re good to go.

I also recommend any irons from the Wilson Staff D series.

A brand that often gets overlooked but their D series irons are a great forgiving set of irons for the money and can be picked up very cheap second hand.

Ping G series are great too as mentioned above, and the G series drivers/woods/hybrids are all ideal for any skill level.

Would 100% recommend getting decent branded second hand clubs over a brand new set from a cheaper manufacturer. Ebay is usually cheaper than GolfBidder if you can afford to wait around for auctions to end.

Only clubs in my bag that aren't second hand are my wedges as I like to buy them brand new to use the fresh grooves.
