Sportsmen / women cover their mouths when talking

Seems like a recent thing.

Obviously to prevent lip-reading, but seems odd. Surely lip reading is a retrospective thing - unless opponents were engaging lip readers to inform them in the middle of matches?

They also do this in football whilst walking off the pitch. Anybody really care about their inane post-match pleasantries?
