I have a pair of Brooks Pure Grit 3 trail shoes. These are comfortable, fit well (supportive, but good toe box space) and grip well on gravel and rock, presumably have a rock plate in the sole, with a low (~4mm) heel drop. They are excellent shoes in the dry, but not great on mud.

I also have a pair of MoreMile Cheviot shoes that are good for mud.

I recently wore my Brooks shoes for a few mountain run/scrambles during a holiday in Croatia. The mountain terrain was harsh and rocky. The Pure Grit shoes were really comfortable and grippy, but suffered very badly over ~40km. A few of the tread studs on each shoe were ripped off and the uppers were worn right through on the instep area.

Any ideas for a suitable, more robust replacement?

I've tried some later Brooks Pure shoes and the toe box was narrower, for some strange reason.

I've tried on various Innov8 shoes in the shops in the past, but the fit felt wrong.

I either use Asics gore-tex trails or go the full Scarpa (approach shoe, can't remember the name of the style) Gtx route if it's a serious scramble.

Mate of mine who is a very keen trail/mountain runner and manages a shoe shop swears by La Sportiva for rougher terrain.
