Winter Olympics 2018
Discussion
So the 2018 Winter Olympics are upon us. Curling and ski jumping have already started although the opening ceremony isn't till Friday morning 11am UK time.
GB flag is being carried by Lizzy Yarnold who won Gold in the skeleton in 2014. A squad of 59 has been sent, competing in 11 of the 15 different sports.
PyeongChang is 9hrs ahead of UK and very cold, with temps as low as -23c with wind chill recorded last week.
GB have already lost one athlete, snowboarder Katie Ormerod who's broke her heal in training.
One disappointment for me is that the NHL haven't taken a brake, so all the top hockey players who play in the US wont be at the Olympics.
UK Sport have set a target of 4 medals which is the same won in 1924 and 2014.
So where do we think GB can get some medals from?

Yup, quality
In comparison, they've just said the US athletes are wearing battery powered heated jackets to keep them warm! I don't even know which event the Tongan is competing in, but he's definitely my underdog choice for the whole games!
He was also the Tongan flag carrier in Rio, where he competed in Taekwondo. He'd been doing that for over 20 years.
After Rio, he decided that it would be fun to figure out the hardest possible event to qualify for, just to see if it was possible to do in under a year!!!
OK, he only just scraped the qualifying time, but nevertheless, this wonderful lunatic will be representing the Pacific Island nation of Tonga (lowest ever recorded temperature 10 degrees centigrade) in cross country skiing, despite the fact that in 2016 he'd never even tried skiing!!
Thank God for people like this in the world!

So creepy, in fact, that the creepy woman with the black face mask felt the need to go and sit somewhere else!dino_jr said:
Like the Stepford Wives on speed. Can someone explain what it takes to be a good ski jumper?
Most sports it's obvious what it takes, more power, more endurance, technique etc.
They don't push off hard, thought they might be heavier to get more speed but all look pretty small.
I am guessing aerodynamics in flight are important, is that all there is to it?
