Buying a shotgun privately

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a new pair of 20 bore O/U and have found a pair for sale privately. I've only ever purchased through a dealer, any tips i.e. checking they're not stolen, fraud etc?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Assuming you have a SGL, they should have a serial no. I would assume that there is a national Shotgun S/N register. I would suggest a phone call to your FEO and as him/her to check said database.

After that IMHO it's all down to "touchy feely", can you view them?

I think that when you go and see them if you buy them you need/should see them on the sellers licence, fill out Table 2 on both licences and send your Firearms office some notification (which you can probably do on line these days).

Someone with more recent knowledge will probably be along in a moment as it's been a while (10years) since I had to transfer guns from me to someone else and I got a little rap on the knuckles for not sending the notification through.

They should be listed on his SGC. If they are , there is no issue.

Buy them , have him fill in the required sections of the SGC`s and send notification by email to your local cop lot.

Just as an aside, is it the same process for buying & selling a firearm on a FAC privately?

Yes, the exception being that you require a free "slot" on your license to take the guns or moderators being bought.

No free allocation place then you cannot buy them. Other than that the process is the same.
