Help with a knee support for upcoming ski trip
Discussion
Hi Gents,
Would it be possible to help out with selecting a knee brace?. My ACL was replaced in 2009 after a ski accident and this coming January is the first time I'll be heading back to the slopes. I do an active job and I'm on my feet for 7-8hrs a day. The knee itself is ok for day to day stuff and running around after my three year old but on the odd occasion some twisting movement causes a slight pop behind the knee cap. Is there a solid enough brace to add in keeping the joint rigid enough while on the slopes?. I'm not looking at going full throttle down the slopes and will be restrained for fear of breaking it again.
Thanks in advance

do you do any regular exercise that could help strengthen the joint/legs? I'm thinking squats, wall sits, single leg squats, body weight exercises for the core? another more cheeky question- are you carrying any excess timber? maybe look to minimize the pressure on the knees!
also don't overlook the DIN setting on the bindings, maybe get them backed off a little bit from where you could have them set. obviously if you're popping out too easy then that's not good, but you certainly don't want locked in too tight!
but I have seen adverts and people discussing- ski mojo. definitely not a cheap option!!!! but depends how much you value your knees....

I use a Donjoy Armour when skiing and downhill mountain biking on my right leg.
Pricey, but it fits amazingly, doesn't cause any irritation after wearing it for a full day and massively helps with confidence.
I first bought it prior to surgery so I could mountain bike still, and I was always so surprised when I took it off how loose my lower leg felt.

Did my MCL a few months back, this has been a tremendous help in recovery.

My wife has no ACL currently and has something similar to this, although it was about £100 more (I see now that was for 2) so I guess it's more complicated. It has plastic 'springs' (wiggly things) that slide into it to provide resistance (and can be swapped to more or less resistant).http://www.sportsdirect.com/lonsdale-knee-brace-76...

The consultant told her she could ski in it and she's reported that the knee has become much more stable since she's been wearing it, so I suspect that braces have moved forward a bit since I broke my knee 6 years ago (I didn't snap my ACL though, it just stretched)
I've got a Donjoy aluminium brace that cost about £300.
Great big thing that looks like Brunel designed it, but, to be fair, you pretty much forget it's there when you're skiing. (This one I think http://www.healthandcare.co.uk/protect-your-knees/...
