After extensive statistical analysis I've decided that I play far better golf after a few beers. My putting is better, irons too and if I play a bad shot I deal with it better as I think I'm a bit more relaxed.

Do I just have to accept that if I want to play well in a competition I need a few beers in me first? Do I need to aim for afternoon tee times so I don't look like a complete alchy at 9.00am?

Should I stop playing golf to protect my liver? Nah I'm not giving up golf.

Suggestions please...

It's all about the R-word......relaxation!! One of our regulars is the same, his practice swing is great, a good coil on his backswing and gets through to a full finish... then when he steps forward to hit the ball he tenses up completely and his swing half disappears! It's the mindset of being relaxed on the practice swing, but when the club goes behind the ball the brain says 'right, I've gotta hit it this time' and everything changes. A few beers allows you to stay in relaxed mode!!

For the full 18-hole effect, don't forget to get a couple shipped to the halfway house for a mid-round top up!!

I found I play better (at least initially) with a slight hangover - far fewer swing thoughts, easier to "shake off" the bad ones. So perhaps have your few beers the night before? biggrin

I'm the same at pool.

But I have an optimum level - it's around 4 or 5 pints.

Slightly more and I'm likely to rip the felt, any less and I can't pot for toffee.

At the 4/5 pint level i'm like a pro.

Yes, maybe I need to fine tune it. How many beers before I start and then how many tinnies do I need. Maybe one at the 8th and another at the 14th to see me home. First world problems eh?

Hip flask (or two), especially now the colder months of golfing are upon us. Just don't drive home after a round wink

It is. I used to play probably three times a month and maybe hit balls twice a month and was a 12 handicapper. Had a few lessons a year etc. I broke 80 twice in my life but it's probably fair to say hit the ball better than my handicap.

I stopped playing when my son was born as I couldn't justify the time and no way could I play often enough to play well when I did.

After three years of not even picking a club up a mate persuaded me to play one Saturday. Turned up and didn't bother doing anything other than a few warm up swings. First hole I smacked a drive with a nice soft draw straight down the middle of the fairway and ended the front nine two over par. By the 14th I was four over at which point I started "thinking about the round". 15th hole was a par five....hit a nice drive and had a four iron to the green. I vividly remember standing over the ball thinking "put this in the right area and you've got a par on the hardest hole left on the course".....I of course duck hooked the four iron into thick rough and walked away with a double bogey. Ended up ten over for the round. Ho hum.

Haven't played since. That was five years ago....

I'd totally agree with that for me - and sadly I get carried away dropping £20side bets playing for 4xXO brandy for winners etc then I'm on my arse drunk.
