Hi All.

Just after some opinions and advice.
I'm a keen runner and do a few circuits type workouts a week.
I'm 6'2 86kg and have a fairly normal, balanced diet.

I have never taken supplements or used protein powders/ bars etc before and am pretty clueless about them.
Do they have much of an effect on gains or performance. What about this pre workout stuff I'm hearing about?
Everyone I know that hits the gym uses something but I can comfortably out perform them in anything but lifting, so is this protein only for body builders or can it be used to improve my athletic performance?

If its any use to me any advice on which one to go for as there seems to be so many formulas and how best to use it.

Cheers

Protein powders are a convenient, easy, way to hit your protein macros daily. That's all. You can do the same by eating lots of chicken if you want. Yours will be about 180-200g per day, a typical shake has 20 to 40g. Protein is the building block of muscle so you would use it if you wanted to help build strength/muscle as part of a weight training or other strength training routine.

errr, run performance you need to stack carbs before your run but you need to be really careful not to upset your stomach (low fibre carbs are best). Protein builds muscle, carbs are the fuel that keeps you going (over simplified)

Running:
I don't really have a clue. I only use running in interval training so I wouldn't know what to recommend for an actual runner.

Weight lifting:
Lifting heavier and heavier weights just takes time, and concentrated effort. You can't just approach it as "maybe if I do some protein shakes I will be able to lift more". Take a full body approach to lifting, so don't only focus on just the areas you think are weak. If you go to a gym, ask the people who look like they can lift weights where to start, or get a trainer for a few sessions. I use protein powder sparingly, only after workout, I don't try to replace meals with it, and I don't use it if I am not going to the gym that day. Your running performance will get way better if you start lifting weights.

If your diet is good, start with some creatine. You'll gain little if anything using a protein supplement.

What is it your looking for? Protein and pre workouts are very seperate areas.. Protein is unlikely to improve your athletic performance in any measurable way. Some pre workouts will temporarily. Creatine will over time.

You won't need any extra protein if that is the case.
