I know there is a thread about the Olympics in the sport section but it's really not getting much action so I hope this will stay in the wider audience of the lounge.

I really enjoy the Olympics and am looking forward to seeing some incredible sporting action.

However, and I don't know if it's because of the Euros, the publicity seems abysmally low key or perhaps I've missed it.

Also how will team GB perform, can they match there medal haul in London? Half as many wouldn't be bad.

And will the Bolt cement his legendary status?

Interested in the opinions of others.

I'm not holding out for an exceptional Olympic Games to be honest.

Rio looks a mess, it has been poorly financed, stadiums have been poorly constructed and poorly delivered, you've had the Zika virus, etc. etc.

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think it's going to be as good as London!

I seem to be talking to myself in the other thread.

It doesn't look like a great start. The city declared a financial calamity, the Zika thing and people not going because of it (although they are both pro golfers so its probably not their thing anyway). Three Spanish rowers on a practice at the venue were robbed at gunpoint.

Our best hopes for medals in track and field will be from the usual names, Farah, Ennis-Hill, and Rutherford. As long as her Achilles behaves I think Ennis-Hill will get the gold, Farah is pretty likely to get at least one if not both the 5 and 10k.

The US are looking strong in both track and field and the swimming. Phelps will be at his 5th Olympics, impressive for a swimmer. GB chances for medals in swimming will be down to Peaty in the breaststroke. Don't think anyone else can come close to him. The rest will get wiped by the US, China, and the Ausises.

Big worry for the sprints is Bolt is currently out with a torn hamstring (having not exactly set the world on fire this season anyway), meanwhile two time drugs cheat and all round bell-end Justin Gatlin is setting world leading times.

Welcome 944. I hope this thread can stay in the lounge as the one in Sports isn't getting attention. This is the Olympics, the greatest show on earth!!

Doesn't Bolt usually have these "Issues" and then pull it out of the bag when the time comes?

Also haven't GB got some top female sprinters? Are they realistic medal hopes?

Yes keep the thread in here. Nothing cracking in the Sports section.

There was a big question mark at the worlds last year as Bolt looked weak leading in and Gatlin looked strong and Bolt had him. Hopefully we will get the same this year but a hamstring injury this close has to be a worry. He has said he hopes to be back for the anniversary games end of this month. Fingers crossed that some injury befalls Gatlin, fking tt.

There are some strong sprinters in the GB team both men and women. However, they are doing ok in the local events and will probably get close in the Euros but I think when they get to Olympic level they will miss out. The top 10 world leading times for women in both 100 and 200 are dominated by the Jamaicans, Americans and Dafne Schippers.

Interesting to see how Cav and Wiggo get on in the cycling. Cav seems to have found some form in t TdF so maybe he is in good shape.

As far as the event itself goes, its widely acknowledged that Brazil, and Rio in particular, dont really need to spend billions on infrastructure and stadia that will be left empty following the games. Many of the stadiums built for the 2014 World Cup are now either empty without a local club capable of taking on the rent. Its got to be a serious risk that many of the new facilities built for the olympics will suffer the same fate. Personally all that does take the shine of it for me, I have no idea why Brazil wanted both the World Cup and the Olympics so soon after each other and indeed, believed that there was an agreement from the Organisers of such tournaments that they wouldnt allow it but i guess money talks. It will be interesting to see how many Russians make it to Rio!

As for the sport, GB will do well but not to 2012 levels.

Do we know yet what TV coverage is going to be like here?

Could be a good lympics for team GB, especially now that many of the Russians won't be there. I think it will be one of the odd olympics like Moscow or LA with the Cold War boycotts.

I think there will be some big doping upsets possibly even the full extent of the Kenyan and Jamaican doping finally coming out. I hope Usain Bolt is going to be the next big name to get implicated. To me though, It's highly unlikely he's doing it clean when you look at the number of his teammates caught doping, the criticism towards the Jamaican doping authority, the number of his competitors caught doping and the jumps in performance he made in 2007.
