Thinking of doing some run commuting over the summer, bus in and run home, so want to be able to carry stuff back with me.

I've got a 15 liter airback rucksack which would be big enough, but the waist strap is bit too high on me, and I've got a couple of other similar sized rucksacks without waist straps which I haven't tried running with yet but I'd expect them to bounce around too much.

Any recommendations? I know there's a few on here that run commute, what do you use?

Inov8 is my preferred brand for running rucksacks. I've used Salomon too but I find the straps don't stay tight which is exceptionally annoying.

I'm a big fan of this one from Nike.

I'm only a small chap and find it fits me very well, though there's easily enough length on the various straps to accommodate bigger folks. Locks down really well for a snug fit with no bounce. It's not the biggest bag, but I'm able to carry a pair of trainers, a top, shorts, my lunch and a few other daily bits and pieces into the office, and then whatever I've worn that day in the office back home.

Straps on that Nike look pretty similar to my current bag so I'm wondering if it might also be a bit short. I'm only 6'2" but long in the back so a lot of rucksacks end up being loose on the shoulder straps if I get the waist strap in the right place.
Innovate Race Pro 10 seems to be on sale at the moment but again looks quite short in the back. Obviously need to try a few on.

Do you try to carry the weight on the waist strap like you would on a walking ruck sack or am on a red herring and would be better off with tight shoulder straps and not bothering about the waist?

I use the waist strap purely to control movement of the pack, not for weight-bearing so the height is not so important. The smallest race-packs sit high between the shoulder blades and are more vest-like than walking pack.

Might have another play with my existing rucksack first then and see if I get it to fasten tight enough.
I've seen a few long distance folk wearing the waistcoat type, look comfortable but presumably they're rubbish for carrying anything bulky and are just intended for water and gels?

Like Ewen, I use the waist strap to stop the bag from bouncing up and down or left and right.

I try and balance the load on my shoulders and across my chest.

Yep. I use an Inov8 RaceUltra vest for racing - I can fit the compulsory kit for fell/mountain races in it and find it comfortable but it's a max of 5L. I use an Inov8 RacePro22 bag for my run-commute but I think that's no longer available.

I use a Tresspass which has a 2L water reservoir and carries my laptop and a book nicely. Also carry my lunch to work which is a 6 mile run.

It has a waist and a chest strap and when running I use both and I barely know it's there.

Ultimate Direction do a good range - from 3lt to 30lt depending; they are all 'waiscoat' style so you get front pockets for water/gels etc. The new PB 3.0 is 16lt / 400gms. The bigger ones are like a vest/rucsac hybrid. All the UD ones are comfy unless you start to over-pack.

I'd like to like the inov8s as they do great shoes but they appear to use a bladder system that I'm less keen on.

Other well used options are the Salomon ones, but they only go up to 12lt I think and are quite expensive, but light.

My Inov8 RaceUltra vest came with both a bladder and 2 holster-bottles. I tend to use the pack for kit and the strap-mounted holsters for fluids.

Cheers, I'll have to take another look!
