Do you go out running in icy conditions? If so, do you have any specific running shoes you use for this?

There were several stretches of icy pavements and frozen puddles on my run today and I was slipping all over the place in my normal running shoes (Brooks Adrenaline GTS). I had to run so slowly that I couldn't really get a good workout which was anoying.

I'm thinking of getting some track spikes or some kind trail shoes to get me some traction. Would this be a good idea?

What do you guys do?

Edit to fix typo! smile

Any old shoes should be fine. https://youtu.be/c7W9d2DskLU

If you mean trail shoes, on ice, they're just as good as high heels.

Patchy ice/snow on pavements is hard to accommodate as your shoes need to work on the clear sections too. Nothing to suggest other than modifying your running style to use less of a leg push and more of a thigh lift - it's difficult though. Spikes will just die on the hard pavement sections. Possibly some Yak-Trak type things (mini-spikes that clip onto your shoes) might work.

Running on snow - I use Inov8 fell running shoes.
Running on ice - I try to avoid, although when the track ices up a bit, spikes are good.

I've tried Adidas and Inov8 trail shoes in the past but now swear by my Icebugs - can't say I've run in snow with them but they are a Swedish brand so I'm sure they will be fairly good.

ice skates are particularly good at running on ice, trainers without studs are not

try to go somewhere in between if you want a usable shoe for mixed conditions.

I managed to get a pair of Innov8 OROC 340 for a smidge over £30, so I'll give these a go. I'm not sure how long the studs will last on the clear stretches of tarmac, but they should be good on my Parkrun which is loose ground.
