Hi all,

I've had some great times trying to catch fish - but all been guided or on a boat so I've not had to worry about my own gear.

We regularly go to North Devon as a family and I'd like to start fishing there with my sons - the rocks off Westward Ho!, inshore from Bideford and from the sand off the Bar.

We'll be spinning using lures rather than bait at this stage and aiming to catch bass or cod.

Could anyone give me an idea of what weight and type of line I should use, and perhaps critique my current choice of rod/reel?
I'd also like to buy a box of selected lures/jellies just to get us started.

This is all bargain basement stuff.

You really want stuff designed specifically for salt water, particularly the reel. The one you have picked doesn't look like it would last that long once it's full of salt and sand.

You don't need to spend a fortune to get something half decent.

As for weight of line, I would probably go with something around 30lb for the mainline.

Edit: Something like this could be a good one stop shop setup

As with all of these kind of things you might do better if you handpicked exactly the stuff you need but if you're not sure it makes a compelling case.

Thanks for that - wasn't sure about the reel.

That kit looks comprehensive and reasonable priced, but I'm after a shorter/lighter rod with lighter line for spinning.

Is there something similar for lure fishing?
