I grew up listening to Richie Benaud, each day beginning with a cheery "Morning, everyone". He educated me about cricket and was one of the great sports commentators.
Condolences to his family.
+1Condolences to his family.
Could have written that word for word.
Didn't need to jump up and down and make a song & dance of things, just pure, clear commentary that painted a picture for those who weren't there. Seems to have been a decent guy off the field, very helpful to those who followed him into broadcasting and journalism, according to the tributes paid on Twitter this morning.
RIP Richie.
Goodnight everyone.
Stumps.
To those of us of a certain age cricket comes with a gentle light Aussie lilt.
Still, there is a pleasing cyclical pattern that I think Benaud would appreciate, out with the old in with the new. His passing comes at the start, the very cusp of a new season. Life may go on but its the little aspects of continuity that give us the tale and Benaud was the finest teller of them all.

Very sad news indeed....without compare.

genuinely sad to hear this, he was the voice of cricket growing up as a kid along with Jim Laker and Peter (can never remember his surname - he was a presenter, bald head).
what a lovley bloke he was whenever I saw him interviewed or heard of him and a terrific cricketer too.
"well, here we are again at a' Old Trafford, and a' its Arnie Sidebottom, to Steven Waugh (Waugh, what is he good for? absolutely nothing...say it again)...
RIP, 84 not out.

Quite simply one of the 2 best sports commentators in my lifetime (the other being Bill McLaren)
I don't feel sad though - he had a fantastic life doing what he loved for 84 years and it seems no one had a bad word to say about him.
He introduced new generations to cricket & I suspect, although he would have been too modest to say it himself, that he is reflecting now on a job well done.
RIP
