I've got a shotgun although not used it for a while. I'd quite like to go on a pheasant shoot at some point. I'm thinking about having a couple of lessons as I say it's been a while. Would you recommend this? Or do I just go to the local clay place and fire away for practice. Where is the best place to search for a pheasant shoot?

Thanks for all the help.

you have until the autumn to practise as the season is now closed smile
get some lessons - best option and any decent shooting school will be able to advise about buying days

I was invited on a shoot last year. Good day out but if I'm honest, it is a bit manufactured, i.e. no adventure whatsoever. You just stand between the cover crop field and the woods and wait for the birds to be beaten out of the crop.

It also seemed to be full of people who didn't have a pot to piss in but their fathers have always shot, so therefore they must carry on the tradition.

If you want to hit anything, take a couple of lessons (which are comparatively cheap) and maximise your effort on the pheasant shoot (which can be expensive).
Shoots vary wildly in the way they are run and the feel of the day, IMO.
Some are rustic and some are very "production line".
Around where I live, you can pay as you go at a couple of pheasant shoots, but it's a bit stockbroker belt.
If you are more rural, I guess you can befriend local farms and go ad hoc?

OP try gunsonpegs it's the PH for shooting

I would recommend a couple of lessons at a decent shooting school that specialises in sporting and ideally has a decent height tower - there are some in Yorkshire which your profile suggests would be closer for you

Have fun

Thank you for your help. Can you recommend any in Yorkshire?

It's obviously a massive county so depends on your location - places like Park Lodge in East Yorks look good but may be a long drive if you are West Yorks - I'm based in the south of England so am only going of websites - you'll be better speaking with one of the Yorkshire gun shops near you for a recommendation

Try getting in with a syndicate that actually runs the management of the shoot themselves and rough shoot.

Completely different ball game.

+1

I do walked-up or 'rough' shooting, which is a nice alternative.

A group of you sets off on a walk round the fields/woods with a couple of dogs and you just shoot any Pheasants, Partridge, Woodcock etc that the dogs flush out on your walk.

It's really nice as its just a few mates out with the dogs for a few hours in the countryside and nothing artificial about it. If you flush and shoot 20 birds between you all then great, but sometimes it's only a couple, but that's all part of the fun.

Guns On Pegs is a good recommendation as mentioned.

This was with a syndicate.
