A fishing rod question
Discussion
Mods: Couldn't work out which section to post this in so just bunged it here.
A question for you fisherman out there. I need to buy some new rods for a specific purpose but I don't even know what to type of rods to search for.
Ideally they will be 10-11 feet in length and have a test curve of about 7-10 lbs and be able to hold a multiplier reel.
What should I be searching for? Doe sthat describe a boat road or a shore casting rod or what? I cant really find what I am looking for and then I get into the realm of casting weights being quoted instead of test curves and I am finished.
Thanks

Would be useful to know the purpose. i.e. I'm assuming you're talking about sea fishing, casting in some way. Off a boat, you'd generally have a shorter stubby rod. From a pier or the beach, you'd need longer to reach out and cast furthe). I'm not too much of an expert, but as far as I know, the test curve is only one factor in a rod strength - you need to factor in rod breaking weight and line strength too.
Also, 7lb is quite a hefty rod are you after some big fish or expecting to cast a long way?

Big river fish (100lbs+ perhaps). Probably both from a boat and from the shore. Hard fighting in potential heavy currents. Also, 7lb is quite a hefty rod are you after some big fish to expecting to cast a long way?
I want something a bit longer than a boat rod due to the multi purpose nature.
The test curve I'm honestly guessing at. It seems about right but based on nothing more than gut feel. I don't think 3.5 or 4 lbs carp rods will cut it, based on guesswork

Interesting requirements. I'm more familiar with casting weights than test curves, but possibly an uptide rod or one of the longer 30-40lbs class boat rods might fit the bill. I doubt they'd be any longer than 9 feet or so though.
I'm assuming (possibly foolishly) that you'll be fishing for something that has been caught before, what gear do others use? Are you after Sturgeon or Catfish?

Have a mooch through the Penn website, you can make all sorts of combos. When we were first fly-fishing for 300/400lbs marlin, no one had really done it before, so we made it up as we went along.
Do your on custom rig for what you think you're going to need.

Can't give an answer but there's a good huntin', shootin', fishin' shop on the White Lion road between Amersham & Little Chalfont.
That's not far from you is it?

Maybe they can advise.
