Sarry/Ulster Heineken quarter final
Discussion
Putting aside any prejudice against Borthwick - difficult I know - what do you think of the red card?
My youngest takes a lot of catches and is lifted in the lineout so I lean towards safety once a player is in the air, but the video shows that Pyne's eyes were on the ball all the time. He would not have been aware of Goode until the last second or so. Indeed, he even led with his head. It seems clear that it was not deliberate.
It is all right for Greenwood to go on about 'the second one in' but how was Goode to know he was indeed second?
The decision to red card made for an exciting match but looking back I'm not sure it was right.
As an aside:
My day was ruined yesterday by a ref whom, if you called him inept, would have been over-praising him. I congratulated one of the other side's committee at the end of the match as they are all but guaranteed promotion and he apologised for the ref. Never known that before. The ref was confusing in his decision and gave no instructions so the players didn't know which way he was giving penalties. Our side were given 10m penalties three times, which makes a grand total of 3 times all season.

Didn't watch this game, but weren't Munster superb?
I really wouldn't fancy playing them in the semis.
Indeed they were very impressive. There were 15 minutes in the second half where they lost the plot and lost the match, but even then they came back, and all this one man down.I really wouldn't fancy playing them in the semis.
The match was brilliant.
Looking at this http://thescore.thejournal.ie/jared-payne-red-card...
I think he was in fact running into the challenge and tried to pull out of a full on tackle in the air, still a red though (in my opinion)

Ref gave a red on the injury/treatment not the collision. Payne never took his eye off the ball until he'd pretty much collided with Goode. Borthwick game across as a complete prick in the post match interview with his concern for not knowing how Goode was. Funny how he was back in the changing room at halftime with his team....My youngest takes a lot of catches and is lifted in the lineout so I lean towards safety once a player is in the air, but the video shows that Pyne's eyes were on the ball all the time. Was v surprised not to see a cricket score against 14men.

Funny, I thought a prick came over as a complete Borthwick. Two points in it! I was cheering for Ulster. Was v surprised not to see a cricket score against 14men.
I haven't seen the incident but read about it.
In any sport as a player you are in control of your actions..."having your eye on the ball" or "there was no intent" doesn't and shouldn't come into it.
If you do something that is against the rules, inadvertent or not, you have to accept the punishment.
If refs did things like this more often it would reinforce the point.
E.g less kicking and chasing in rugby, less swearing at officials in football etc

But don't we have 'accidental offside'?In any sport as a player you are in control of your actions..."having your eye on the ball" or "there was no intent" doesn't and shouldn't come into it.

A trip with no intent is still a trip but the lack of intent means there's no risk of a card.
You have to ask what he was supposed to do. Both players had their eyes on the ball right up until the last moment so by that logic both were at fault. Any coach will berate a player who takes his eyes from the ball before the catch.
I'm happy with a penalty. I'd even say a yellow was reasonable, but a red, with all that that entails, was, to my mind, unreasonable for an action that anyone could have done.
If it is considered so dangerous as to be life threatening then are we going to ban jumping.
On a lineout two players often jump almost side by side. There is bumping. A decision from the ref is whether it is deliberate, careless of just one of those things.
You get a red for a punch. I don't think this had anything like the same intent.
