I use a Bushnell laser range finder like this: http://www.bushnellgolf.com/laser/tourv2.cfm

No worrying about signal or any yearly subscriptions to worry about, it is very easy to use and they are very accurate.

I have had the S3 since Xmas.

8 of us went away in Spain recently, and 3 of us have them (1 has the S2). Another one has the new Bushmills (sp) one. One particular course was not on any of our watches - we were all moaning - they are brilliant pieces of kit. You don't realise how much you use them, until you can't use them!

To be honest though - a couple of times we were still going to other mates viewfinder/clip on bag devices, as the watches do not tell you how far all hazards are. All I really use it for is how far is the front and back of the green, and then I know how deep the green is, and what I am going to play depending on where the flag is.

We played 36 holes one day, and none of them lasted the 36 holes (were slow 5 hour rounds though). The Bushmills one does not look as smart as the Garmins - and must use different information as it is always approx 5 yards out from the Garmins - but I have no idea whose is correct. It seems to have same functionality though, and is quite a bit cheaper.

I updated mine last week (and has now picked the course up in Spain it was missing), and it was very easy to update. It does get a bit confused when playing courses with double greens - but I just drag the pin to the correct side of the green, and just use the front of green information.

You won't regret getting one, and is so much less hassle than the viewfinders, or even the clip on ones.

Golfshot for me, does more than distance, keeps all your saved rounds, stats, distance, etc etc

Well worth the money, and it's a one of cost

I have had apps on the phone before, and played with people that have them. It is so unsociable! Same goes for the viewfinder.

What is great about the watch is you just look at your wrist and have all the information to hand.

Nearly everyone I know that has had the apps on phone or viewfinder type have all moved to the watches now. To be fair to the clip on devices, most people I know that have had them, have only moved to the watches after their device has broken - and they do miss some of the features. What they don't miss is having to download the course information prior to playing a course (although newer ones I am sure hold more courses).

Also note the watches are also a one off cost - there are no additional costs to it. Just remember to charge it!

This, every time.

Takes approx 5 seconds to 'gun' pins, bunker faces, edges of lakes, trees etc.

Sorry - but for me phones belong in your bag turned off. One time of the day to not be disturbed. I don't want to know the football scores, the news, etc etc - everyone I know and play with that have their phone out for a golf app, will end up using it for something else when on the course. Just get up there, see your distance, work out what you are going to play, and play your shot.

The viewfinders should be ok, and I have used one, but everyone I play with leaves it in their bag, so gets it out, takes an age to focus it, then puts it away - every shot!

Too much faffing takes place on the course as it is. All in my experience of course. Is as annoying as people marking their cards on the green, leaving their bag over the other side of the green, etc etc.

I sound miserable and old - but golf is golf!

I just use it for the golf App, ringer off, ignore texts, but do empathise with you ref people marking cards on greens and not being ready to play their shots, the list could be very long of things that players should do but don't

I have just bought a second hand Motoactv for £120 which has a golf app built in. It uses the courses from Skydroid so you can add your own and it gets a good write up.

http://www.mygolfspy.com/motoactv-watch-gps-review...

Really looking forward to the online round review which should help my game quite a bit. Not sure how many other watches do this.

It is also a really good running watch as well.

I just used my Motoactv for the first time and loved it.

Here is the link to my round.

One thing I didn't realise was that you have to mark the first shot from the tee. I was assuming it knows where the tee is and you mark where the 1st shot landed. This is why the holes start in the fairways rather than the tee but you can see the stats you get and I love the way you can see the round and clubs you used along with all the stats.

Mobile phones apps are fine for general play but cannot be used in golf comps - and the best way to get gps for free, but be warned that they cannot be way out on distance, unlike Garmin, Skycaddie as employees would go to course and map the greens etc.

i have the skycaddie SG5 and it's great but as other people have mentioned not always accurate and they do not list all of the hazards - Plus you have to pay £30 a year!

So i have gone for the new Bushnell tour V3 jolt laser range finder, great piece of kit. Bushmills make single malt not range finders.

Surely buying modern clubs is the same then? IMO any way you can get better legally is fine. I used my Motoactv and it shows me all the stats about my round and will let me see my actual distances with clubs rather than guessing. I can also see where I am missing the fairways so I can practice/ get a lesson or 2 to correct this. At least I will be able to tell the pro what I need rather than saying "I just want to improve".

i just find it suprising that a golfer of any reasonable ability wouldnt know how far he/she can hit their shots with repsctive clubs. Surely thats part of the game ?
I mean no offence to anyone but whats next a line finder on the greens ??

There must be a way of getting it to show from the tee. Does look like a good bit of kit though - but not sure I fancy walking round with a flatscreen TV on my wrist!!

That is a good point I notice on the Moto above it shows elevation, and I am sure that is banned in competitions as well?

Old article - but quite interesting.

Fair enough but these devices allow you to know accurately how far to the green/hazards. IMO it is exactly the same as a pros caddy. Should they not be allowed to give yardages? A lot of courses I play only have 150 markers so unless you are 10 yards or less away it can be hard to gauge distances. My Motoactv logs my distance, position and lie and I think it will allow me to improve by seeing where I am going wrong.

I am all for improvement Tycho, perhaps its me that needs the gadget !! if it helps you then go with it. .

It just reminds me of two guys i used to play with years ago that would discuss all the way round, why they hit the shots they did, where they were going wrong, why a new set of clubs would be the answer, and one of them even bought the David Duval style 'a bats landed across my nose' wrap round glasses thinking that would give them the edge. . . .and guess what, no improvement to speak of. . . thats my point.
