I remember in the summer of 2005, I phoned in to work with a number of "sickies". Ahem.

I do not regret any of them, but I'm glad to have been incapacitated when - with Australia requiring just 2 runs to win at Edgbaston - Steve Harmison bowls a speculative bouncer to Simon Katich, who gets all crossed up. Jones takes a diving catch to his left.

Benaud was in the commentary seat: "JONES.........BOWDEN!".

Billy Bowden raises his crooked finger.

England level the test series.

For me, Ashes moments don't get more spine tingling than that unless you know better?

I still think for overall drama the 2005 series will never be bettered but,

Ray Bright's middle stump cartwheeling out of the ground in '81. Willis 8-43.

I remember turning the TV on with a resigned sigh as the Aussies were 50 odd for no wicket.
Even after Bothom's 149 it was still a given England would lose, remember they had followed on and left
the Aussie's a modest 130 to win. Willis steamed in catches stuck. For once and England team had grasped Victory
from the jaws of defeat.

I have a couple.

Mike Whitney batting for ever ( 18 balls ) against Richard Hadley at his best to salvage a draw.

The Harmison ball biggrin

Not an ashes moment but sitting with Hadley & Lillie in the Brewongle Stand at the SCG for a short while during SA's first one dayer in Australia when they were readmitted to the cricketing family.

They were just wandering through the stands together and sitting down randomly to chat with the punters.

Day two, first Test of the 1993 Ashes, Old Trafford. Shane Warne bowls Gatting with the ball of the century.

Graham Gooch "He looked as though someone had just nicked his lunch",
Gooch "If it had been a cheese roll, it would never have got past him."

I've not heard that one before.

I do remember one test (I'm not sure if it was against Australia), where Gatting stopped a flick off the batsman's pads at mid on with a gentle dive. As he got up, he grimaced a little and the lead commentator said, 'Oooh dear. That looks like one horse that needs new shoes'. Co-commentator - a certain Mr. Boycott - immediately said, 'If that were my horse, I'd have it shot!'

Anyway, Warne's Old Trafford ball to Gatting was a snorter. I think this bests it, personally.

Darren gough's hat trick in the 1999 series takes some beating,

But watching Hoggie & the king of spain hit the winning runs in the 4th test in 2005 was a highlight for me

Sadly today's fiasco has been a real downer for me .

I thought kerrigans 8 overs this test was some inspiring stuff. England must be looking forward to the next generation coming through. World beaters for sure!

Wonderful 'sporting' moment amongst the furore of an England win. Andrew remembering to congratulate/comiserate Brett Lee on a battling innings.

One of the defining images of the 2005 series, that.

Although Boxing Day 2010 was pretty close to bettering it.
