Fly fishing is a great sport. If I had advice for a newbie it would be to get a lesson in casting. Will make a massive difference.

Funnily enough I was going to post similar, and in particular whether anyone had caught Bass on the fly around the UK?

I fish a couple of times a year, and have been very fortunate to have done a good number of days on the Test in the past. As mentioned in the post above, I really would get a lesson in casting, it makes such a difference to your enjoyment. The days we did on the Test (a stretch owned by one of the Farlows of Pall Mall chaps) came with the owner as guide/tuition (we were taking clients) and within half an hour he easily doubled my casting distance.

Also, if possible as and when you go to buy a rod, try and have a feel of it in person. I bought what should have been a reasonably good rod from a catalogue (pre-internet days). Whilst I'm not saying it was a bad rod, it really didn't match my casting in that it was a very whippy rod.

I am on the hunt for a new rod now as I found yesterday that all my fishing rods have been stolen from my garden shed frown

I fly fish, mainly for Rainbow trout on reservoirs or larger small fisheries. I prefer to float tube if I can but will use a boat if necessary. A casting lesson or two is the best thing you can do to try and avoid the frustration that comes with doing it wrong. There are some good forums around the two I follow are

I took my Dad fly fishing for Father's Day about 4 years ago. We both enjoyed it so much that we go several times a year now on local stillwaters.

I tend to prefer river fishing compared to stillwaters and recently took my Dad for a day on the River Coln at Fairford for a Birthday/ Christmas present. He really did enjoy river fishing, although was a little disappointed he could take the fish home.

Have fished the River Usk with Frank Williams http://www.frankwilliamsflyfishing.co.uk/ and would definately recommend for casting instruction; it was Frank who we went with for the Father's Day present.

Would also recommend Jim Williams http://www.fishinglessons.co.uk/ who we fished the River Coln with. He actually wrote a really nice blog http://www.fishinglessons.co.uk/blog/2013/05/compe... about the day, which my Dad loves showing friends and family.

Be warned, it's a slipperly slope though. Spent a day salmon fishing on the River Tweed http://www.tweedswood.com/ just outside Melrose in Scotland in May. Didn't catch anything but spent a really enjoyable day with a Ghillie on hand to give casting instruction.

Well.....I went to the local open water place the other day. Didn't catch a thing but then again neither did the people know what they were doing.

Lessons learn't from trying to do it myself:

Need to get some good quality line as the floating line I was using is a little rubbery and kept getting tangled.

Must order a longer Leader - mine was about a foot long, others at the lake about 3 feet long!
