Okay, here goes.

Have struggled with my weight for almost two decades now. Ran the London Marathon in 1988 and a few smaller ones but all those years of over-eating (not drinking, I'm almost teetotal) took its toll. So last September, I contacted William Hill bookmakers and asked for odds on losing a lot of weight in ten months. They agreed to give me a price and a stake amount, with the proviso that it would go to the under-12s football team if I did it. The deal was struck to lose 6 stone in ten months, ending on August 4th 2013.

So on October 4th last year, I weighed in at 22 stone 10 pounds at my local Boots store. Things went well for several months then I hit the inevitable plateau in April and May. Last couple of months have been much better but the plateau period has left me behind schedule. I now need to shed a stone by August 4th (weighed in at 17 stone 10 on Monday). eek

Currently I go to the gym three or four times a week and stick to cardio. I've upped my sessions to 40 minutes on a treadmill, 40 minutes on a reclining bike and 20 minutes rowing. I am eating fairly well though occasionally give in and eat a chocolate bar, a couple of biscuits or a bag of crisps. But breakfast is Special K with a cut-up banana on it, lunch is pasta and rice with tea usually being a wholemeal sandwich with tuna & sweetcorn or cheese.

How can I now push on and get rid of this last stone? Yes, I could get a limb cut off but (a) it would hurt and (b) not sure the hospital would agree. I like my food enough to not want to go down the Slimfast route and I'm not going to use slimming tablets. What can I do now to shed this last pesky stone that will work? I've looked online and there's a few ideas but would rather throw it out to real people in the PH collective.

I've just lost 25lb in 4 weeks. I did it by calorie restricting: 600 cals two days a week (non-consecutive), 1600 the other days. I swim for an hour hard three days a week and try for a 7 mile walk at weekend. Heavy on protein (tuna, salmon and eggs).

Your doing the right things as evidenced already, you just need to do more. So:

Move more, surely you've got fitter so to get the same results you need to up your intensity and length of training.

Eat less, there's a lot of complex carbs in there and you probably need them, but effectively you need to put yourself in a large deficit, in reality if your doing enough of the first this really shouldn't matter too much, just keep hydrated enough to keep flushing the crap out of your system.

Effectively you'll end up exhausted (mentally & physically), starving and grumpy. I wouldn't recommend this but you could use the boxers/jockey's routine on the day of the weigh-in if you're close i.e. within a lb, it's dangerous, ie. fasting, sauna's and enemas/laxatives.

Thanks to both of you... clap

At the moment, I'm burning around 1,400 to 1,700 calories in the gym so it wouldn't take much more to get to 2,000 - maybe another 20-30 minutes. I have already considered saunas and after getting some interesting results on Google last night for my area ( hehe ), a local leisure centre has a good deal on saunas, something like £4 for two hours in one, not that I'd be in there for two hours. Really, I have to be within four or five pounds with a week to go otherwise it won't really be possible.

Juice Diet.

I lost a stone in a week and it has stayed off. Some are a bit funky, some need some serious willpower to down but after day 4 you don't crave owt else.

http://www.juicemaster.com/7lbs-in-7-Days-Super-Ju...

100% reccomend it, Ive tried Dukan, Atkins, Cambridge and WW and with the exception of WW, all have been yo-yo in terms of weight gain.

Just my 2c.

Pretty standard behaviour, unfortunately.

Given that you (the OPer) have already lost a fair bit and have been dieting a while, metabolism will be lower. If I really had to push things further (especially for a bet), then I'd be doing HIIT after a bd strong coffee plus eating a VLCD, and in the last couple of days, cutting salt and sugar right out of my diet plus reducing my fluid intake for the last 24 hours. It is a fking stupid thing to do in this climate, though, so I wouldn't advise it. If you make it to weigh in, you'll feel utterly st, probably very weak and dizzy, plus possibly experiencing cramps.

Eating raw chicken is probably safer. nuts

I would prefer to continue as you are, then if you fail, suggest as a goodwill gesture the betting shop donate the money anyway.

Start lifting weights rather than just doing cardio...can burn a huge amount of calories.

I will warn you that you will be sore the first few days after you start.

There are plenty of videos/routines online. I'd go with a full body workout for most muscle groups worked.

In 20 days, I am not sure he'll benefit. He may end up weighing more even if he looks better for it but the bet is all about weight (which is silly).

The focus on weight rather than body composition. Put it this way, I weigh the same as I did a year ago but look different.

When you do strength training, you may put on weight but look great.

Ah right, thanks for clarifying.... thumbup

I felt the need to lose weight as I was approaching 23 stone which I really didn't feel comfortable. I appreciate that it seems daft to some people but I feel so much better for losing five stone. When this is all finished, I want to lose another two stone but also tidy up my body and firm up my stomach, chest and muscle up a bit. But for the purposes of the bet and winning £1,000 for a youth football team, it was right to link it to weight loss as it is more measurable.

Obviously there's the old boxer's trick of sweating it out just before the weigh-in - that's probably good for a little bit of weight without being overly dangerous at your size if the internet can be believed (I'm not a doctor). Make sure to rehydrate as soon as you've been weighed as it's not a healthy thing to do.

I would think about eating more in the morning and less at lunch or dinner - that should help a bit with scheduling and stop your body having sugars to turn into fat overnight.

Lost four pounds last week so ten pounds to go in fourteen days now.

Went for a sauna on Sunday afternoon (bloke gave me a funny look, something to do with the fact it was 85 degrees outside, I guess) and lost two pounds in there after an hour. Will keep the exercise going this week, another sauna on Sunday and hopefully that will leave me with 4-5 pounds to lose in the last week.

Obvious, but don't 'give in and eat a chocolate bar, a couple of biscuits or a bag of crisps' smile

I don't think Special K is as special as it pretends to be - compare the sugar and fat to normal cereal - how about just fruit for breakfast?

When I was losing a small amount of weight I cut out bread and that helped.

As well as going to the gym do you walk everywhere when you can? Don't drive half a mile to the shops, walk up stairs instead of using a lift.

Good luck, I'm fortunate never have had to lose a huge amount and I have great admiration for people who do it!

Just an update to say I did it in the end... but only just.

Challenge ended at 4.30pm today. Had managed to get down to a pound above target this morning but that pound proved a stubborn one to shift. Went on a 3.5 mile walk this afternoon after missing lunch then weighed in still a pound over target. Went back out and ran / walked fifteen laps of the local football ground and weighed in for the final time less than twenty minutes before the store closed.

Came in at a pound under target so actually lost 6 stone 1 pound in 44 weeks.
