Brother in law has been shooting for some time. I visited him on the weekend and he took me to a shooting ground.

I was like this looks like fking hard work. After a few rounds and making sure I followed proper etiquette when it came to loading and unloading the gun and so on I came into my own.

First time shooting and I hit 8 clays, this included rabbits too. Not bad for a complete novice.

A few more visits and I think I will look to take it up. Safe and gun licence to boot....

Great focus sport.

Anyone shoot here?

i had the pleasure of shooting clays for the first time with notorious ph a&e case emsman.

despite the potential for death i thoroughly enjoyed it and have been shooting with him several times. once the summer heat subsides we aim to make it a regular thing.

There's a lot to be said for the stress-relieving properties of blasting lumps of flying clay with bird shot.

Just paid up for the forthcoming shooting season....

12 days on my regular shoot (Partridge), 2 days as part of a team on a cracking pheasant shoot I guested on a season or two back and the 'big one' up in Scotland which takes the lads up to Scotland for a 3 night piss up at a county house hotel and 2 full days on stratospheric pheasant. I've also been invited to guest on the regular Boxing Day shoot in my parents village.

Hit the bank balance properly, but looking forward to it!

It is not a cheap hobby.
An evening of shooting at my local club can cost £35 or £70 if you go round twice.
Plus a round of drinks or two and or a sandwich/burger.

It's not cripplingly expensive, but it's a lot of money if it's not your primary hobby.

Having shot normal clays several times I had a chance to shoot the laser version a couple of weeks back. Seemed like a good compromise for expense with the clays having a reflective backing and just being recovered rather than destroyed. Was a real shotgun with a laser conversion so same trigger and weight just no recoil and the same two shots before each reload. Green light on the gun showed a hit and there was a linked score board. Shot 130 out of 200 which wasn't bad for me but the gun gets heavy when you are stood there for 45min.

Not sure of the costs but has to be a saving in the long run with only power being used up. Couple I was sure I hit but the clay was flying flat so the laser might not have bounced back but it was certainly good enough to use as practice.

Had one go with a mate at Bisley 20+ years ago. He is an experienced shooter of 40+ years. I hit 20 out of 21 clays. He never asked me again, mumbled something about a banker under his breath. wink

Myself and a couple of mates run a small private clay shoot down in sussex. We often invite new guests along to have a go and they invariably do very well. Full of enthusiasm as to how great they are they turn up to the next shoot and find out they're crap. Usually because they have to high an expectation of themselves and don't realise we've given them a few easy stands to get going. And they're trying too hard. The harder they try the worse it gets.

Some of them never come back and those that do then have the long haul of plenty of practice to get to a reasonable standard. Very much like golf in my experience.
