Don't many say Murray doesn't have a personality?
Only those with shoulder-mounted fried potato items. Watching his post-tournament interviews he seems to have a personality. It might not be to everyone's liking but that's hardly unusual for a top sportsman.I can just imagine Andy Murray, having just beaten Djokovic running around centre court thinking "Yes, I'm going to win sports personality of the year!....". He played sport, won and his reward for doing so is a nice gold trophy and £1.5m. He doesnt also need this, a Knighthood etc etc...
I love the way this total non-award is lauded to the extent that it makes Hello magazines "Celebrity Mum of the Year" seem credible...

Because its a British tradition.
Because we have ALL grown up watching it at Xmas. Its a staple of British life, a standard as it were. Its a peculiar, home grown sort of thing, we all watched it as kids, we all dreamt about it etc and back in the day before twitter, blogging, 24/7 rolling news, sat tv, live broadcassting all over the world etc. it was one of the few ways of seeing your sporting heros and with a slightly irreverent style about it. SPOTY is what many of our sports stars simply grew up.
So yes, in some ways it is totally meaningless, its an irrelevence compared to the successes in their chosen sports. In other ways, there is an element of giving something back into the common pool of society. All the sports stars who take their kids onto the field at the end of the events...you can bet those kids will be glued to SPOTY each yr come Xmas.

Pablo - DJRC is spot on I'm afraid.
The issue is not whether Murray cares or not.
The fact it is something of a nostalgic sports icon for British sports fans is what matters. Look at how many people vote. The British Public DO care. That is the important thing in this case. It is why we discuss it, speculate on it, bet on it etc.
Ultimately and as odd as it may sound, the degree of toss that those in the running for the award could or could not give is neither here nor there!

If Justin Rose were to win The Open it might pinch a few Murray votes.
This. I'd vote for Rose winning two majors and the equivalent of Wimbledon over Murray winning one. Plus he's a great personality and probably the best known current English golf pro.Gassing Station | Sports | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
