Big drugs bust in Turkey involving Olympic medalists.

Funny what happens when the testers start rocking up unannounced. If only they could manage that trick on a small Caribbean island....

Add Tyson Gay to the list - see here. Gatlin was the pantomime villain in the 100m but I guess they will all do anything to hang on to Bolt's shadow frown

Did you see the line in there about the athlete did extensive research before taking it...and now is considering legal action. How does that work? Your research couldn't have been that good or you wouldn't have taken it!

That possibly means that the substance they've tested positive for wasn't listed on the list of ingredients.
Also 'banned substance' does not necessarily mean a PED, all sorts are banned for various reasons.

As an athlete(ish) it kills me when big name stars test positive, but every positive is a step forward in terms of taking more cheats out of the sport, which is why the operation puerto court cases and the decision to destroy the blood bags was so incredulous.
Part of me also thinks that if other sports were subjected to the same testing regimes of athletics and cycling we would see far more positives from far more sports.

Possibly... I rather doubt anyone has run under 9.9 without chemical assistance, great spectacle though it is.
Drug taking seems to be endemic so they may as well just stand back at let them do what they want.

After every failed test we get the message about the sport cleaning up and then comes another failure and the same old cliches.

The main problem is the numerous young men and women who know no better that will end up dead as a consequence. We also end up basically watching a circus act, with little or no regard to natural talent.

I do find it sad that I watched James Dasaolu run 9.91 yesterday and after the initial thoughts of what a great run it was came the inevitable thoughts of "I wonder...". I wish it wasn't so, but stories like this put the doubts in your mind.

And that's not going already, with a few words of disapproval from administrators?

wow, sad day for athletics. Imagine if Bolt was caught, the whole sport would implode.
So the Lance Armstrong of athletics hasn't failed a test but all his slower rivals have?

Statement from Powell.
Short version, they found a banned stimulant, and it has been alledgedly included included in supplements with no warning before. http://www.athleticx.net/forum/threads/methyl-syne...
This would tally with the statement that they did not know after research and would be taking legal action.

Re Bolt. Only a case of time. Victor Conte on Twitter is worth a follow on all matters PEDs.

Re Bolt. Only a case of time. Victor Conte on Twitter is worth a follow on all matters PEDs.
I'm not making excuses, but if everyone (or all of the Jamaicans) has been caught with the same stimulant from the same product it possibly points away from intentional performance enhancing and more towards carelessness or ignorance on the part of the athletes and their coaches/nutritionists/agents, or a change in the ingredients, or an ingredient not being listed.

As for Bolt, I genuinely think he's a freak of nature. This is a person who ran 20.58 for the 200m as a 15 year old. It used to be that tall guys didn't do the 100m as they couldn't get out of the blocks well but Bolt has changed that. Obviously you can't say it 100% but I would give Bolt the benefit of the doubt.

The 'banned list' isn't just a piece of paper with half-a-dozen or so steroids listed. It is more like a volume of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. A good proportion of stuff you can buy in the chemist/supermarket when you feel a bit rough / flu like will likely contain something suspect.
