Murray achieves the impossible dream.
Froome destroys them in the mountains and then defends against his rivals singl handedly.

And the Ashes start this week smile

After years of abject misery, British sport is going through a golden age at the moment (so long as football isn't your cup of tea, and it isn't mine).

Wallowing quietly in it.

It's brilliant isn't it? Last year was amazing, this year is turning out just as good.

It's pretty amazing to think this little collection of islands with 60 odd million people punches massively above their weight when it comes to sport on the world stage.

Just wish some people (media mainly) would stop beating our sports people up about perceived "failure".

But we havent for a long time. We had been in slow relatively decline.

Something happened in the last decade though, money came in, restructing came in and slowly we started to change.

In many ways England rugby lead the way and that percolated down, the other nations followed suit. We now have 3 very strong nations.
The cricket team stopped the losses, reorganised English cricket from top to bottom...in its entire culture. We are now reaping the benefits.
Athletics has been reinvigorated.
Henman started the tennis revival, AM has continued it.
Lewis and BJ brought the F1 Championship home and remain at the top. Another Englishman stops anyone else winning currently though, even if he is providing a car for a German in an Austrian team...except lets be honest they are a British team smile Bottom line...Brits rule F1.
Beijing Olympics were superb, London even better.
Cycling? Nuff said.

Of the high profile aspects only swimming and the national football teams dont deliver. Swimming was starting to but has stalled. The FA is simple too arrogant, too weak, too ignorant and too incompetent to understand.

British sport is unrecognisable from 20 yrs ago, hell 15 yrs ago, almost 10 yrs ago in fact. It is quite quite wonderful to feel a part of the sense of optimism that its possible to feel as a British sports fan now. Almost an unbelievable feeling actually to anybody north of 30 who remembers the dark times. We need to embrace this optimism, use it fuel society again.

It's interesting that now Australia have "found" commerce and industry, and consequesntly a lot of cash to boost their economy, their sporting performance on the global scale is slipping.

Perhaps they're all working too hard now?

Conversely - perhaps Britain sees investment in sport and being a successful sports person is a good alternative to being an unemployed call centre worker?

I love the fact we as a nation are up there. But sports must be a huge industry now, perhaps one of the most bouyant we have at the moment?

In a word... professionalism.

Those sports that we have started to achieve in are those where the sports-persons (and supporting teams) have the money AND professional approach to become the best.

Well done to them all, makes a pleasant change to have something to give a sense of national pride after being plucky also-rans for the last 40 years. smile

I actually think that the Olympics last year brought out, eventually! in us that it is better to celebrate winners rather than oh so nears!

it looks good for the rest of the summer too indeed.

(I still don't think England will win a major football tournament in my lifetime)

Not forgetting Justin Rose at the US Open kicking it all off. It's been amazing I dared not dream of 2013 delivering up to the levels of 2012, but so far it's been a cracking summer of sport!

That would certainly explain why we remain absolutely bloody awful at football smile

Perhaps there is something in the vicious infighting world od Fifa that rejects a British team because the 4 home FAs do not wish to lose their seats. Compare and contrast to the mythical status the Lions holds in rugby.

The England banner in cricket is a Lions type effort aswell. Perhaps if our respective FAs grew up and decided to learn a lesson maybe we could come up with a plan? The utter chaos of football administration always amazes me.

And again chaps!

Anderson destroys them at Trent Bridge and Froome destroys them on the Moonscape in Provence.
What a bloody weekend!

See you all next weekend for Lords, Cav, Froome and the Champs?

The Aussies FLAYED by 300+ runs at Lords.
Froom-dawg FLAYING the TdF field.
The Brownlees FLAYING Gomes and the rest of the field alive in Hamburg.
Hannah Cockcroft still unbeaten.

Its ANOTHER wonderful weekend in this summer of sport. Three weekends on the trot boys. I think we have another 3 weekends of FLAYING the Aussies left in the summer, Lewis must be getting close to coaxing the Merc to a top of the podium finish...what else do we have left?
