Beeb story here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cycling/22198392

Incredibly sad news but also really typical of what an absolute gent the guy is - he doesn't want to take a place at the Commonwealth Games from someone, in fear that he might (only might) no longer be at his best by then.

I strongly agree with Cav who reckons that the boom in British cycling is down to/was started by Hoy - the guy hasn't had a year without a major international win since 2002! wobble

A true sporting great - wonder what he'll be doing next?

Slightly disappointed he won't race in the Velodrome next year considering it's named after him, but he knows best I'm sure. Heard he's been racing in cars now though! Think he was getting his license to race with the Radicals. Maybe he already has it actually.

Why would you do that? You know there are idiots out there, so why depress yourself by reading their comments? Ignore them, it's the best way to stay sane and to avoid giving any credence to their view.

Very true.

Probably the same reason I watch TV programmes that I know will have me shouting at the TV in rage. Just can't help it.

OTOH, when I elevated to the station of Lord Grand High Overmaster, I will have a rational and evidence-based justification to remove the idiots' right to use the internet.

I liked it when it was hard to get on the internet.

Rumor is he heard I had recently dusted my bike off and felt the competition coming!

What a legend. He always seems like a nice bloke too.

Meh - I have to say looking at the writing style I would venture that at least two of those user names are the same person, well its a hobby. Sort of.

Always been more of a road cyclign fan, but huge respect for Chris Hoy. Footgae of him training is crazy - just took himself to levels half of which would have reduced me to a messy pile of crying blubber.
