England cricket 2013

There's a lot of test cricket to look forward to, against NZ home and away and then home and away Ashes.
So the first test has just started against NZ. Swann's dodgy elbow problem has reared it's ungly head again, but hopefully he'll be fit in time for the Ashes. Still, at least we get the excellent bowling and entertaining fielding of Monty.
Meanwhile Compton's out cheaply, however I think he's got enough class to come good. Looking forwards to seeing how Root performs at this level too.

McCullum says Cookie is as good as anyone who has ever played the game with the exception of Bradman.
Hell of a compliment (though undoubtedly a little exagerated for effect and mind games.
Underlying point stands though. Cook's form is certainly a lesson to those who would weild the axe after a temporary glitch (football style!)

To be fair he did say at this point in his career. With not too much mangling of history, facts and context he is arguably not too far off. Behind Bradman comes Sachin, Lara, Punter, Smith, Kallis and Cook IS matching or ahead of them at this stage in the career process. In fact looking at the stats, he is pretty much in the mid point of his career with respect to matches and innings played against Sachin, Punter, Dravid, Kallis, Border and Waugh. Doubling his figures now would put him just a smidge behind Sachin across the board.
Those figures are all achieved across careers of 24-16 yrs. Cook is just entering his 7th season in Test cricket, which means rather than being midway through his career, in theory he is only at 40% ish. Looking at the top 25 in fact really it is noticable how most of those career were 15-20yrs. The shortest were Kumar Sangakkara at 13, Smith at 11 (still playing)and Sehwag on 12...still playing. In fact its actually noticable how many of the buggers had 20yr+ yr careers!
Sachin
S Waugh (19)
Chanderpaul (19)
Gooch
Stewart
Sobers
Cowdrey
Lloyd
Kallis is knocking into his 19th season. Even Boycs only did 18.
Chef could arguably then knock the lot off.
