I'm going skiing next month and had my first lesson ever today.
The back of my calves were in agony.
Is it because the muscles are tight?
What exercises and stretches would you recommend to help?
Please remember I'm no Olympic athlete!

A lot of leg pains in beginners are due to tension. Easy to say I know but try to relax. Also check your boots are a nice snug fit. If your foot is moving in the boots then it will destroy your legs.
In terms of exercises; lunges & squats , also up and down stairs with your heels hanging off on the way up are good exercises. Cycling up hills is good for the thighs.
Biggest issue with beginners in my experience is sitting back on the skis. Push forward into your boots and this will take some strain off your calves.

Good luck - once you get it, there's no better sport.p
