Off to watch England vs France on the 23rd at Twickenham - will be getting the train from central London.
Having not managed to get tickets to a 6N match before is there much to do around Twickenham before the match kicks off or should we plan to get there "as late as possible"?

Not much to do really. Couple of bbq's set up on the walk down from the station, couple of rammed pubs. Usually just drink outside the stadium. They have bars set up and food stalls. Though the best food is usually from someone's front garden on the walk to the stadium.

If it's a nice day get there early and go to one of the pubs by the river....few pints, some red meat and a 20 min walk to the stadium. The 20 min walk is key as it gives you a break and you can have one last p1ss before sitting down and hopefully make it to half time before hitting the bogs again.

The Greene King bar on the West (I think) side of the stadium isn't bad. Definitely get food from someones garden on the walk in from the train station, theres some great stuff on offer! Also if you're with o2 they have little o2 only members tents and stuff, no idea how you get into them but its worth looking into.

Oh and theres loads of free stuff being dished out by people, I get a massive St George's flag last time I was there for free

Go to Richmond, loads of pubs for food and pints, fantastic atmosphere. I'd recommend The Sun. Then take the Twickenham special bus from the A316 by The bridge straight to the ground (50p fare). After the game, plenty of pubs in Twickenham by the river, again fantastic atmosphere!

Have a great day, lets hope the Frogs don't turn up :-)

Richmond before the game, stadium just before the game and then the Barmy Arms by the river in Twickenham after the game.

This ^^

Probably best plan of action. Get to the stadium about 20 mins before kick off, this allows you time to get to your seat, get a drink and a snack, and enjoy the anthems.

I go to the Guinness stand/bar for the quality of the female bar staff. And I don't even drink Guinness hehe

Whereabouts is the river in Twickenham, in relation to either the station or the stadium itself?

We usually end up somewhere on the High Street before the game, and in the London Road afterwards, which looks like it should be extremely st, but usually has decent (at least to a pissed ear) live music on. smile

One bit of advice for the OP - don't even think about trying to get a train back straight after the game unless you've got a fetish for squashing up with other people for an hour or more in a queue.

When you come out the station, turn left instead of right and keep walking straight until your feet get wet smile

As the previous poster mentioned, turn left out the station and keep walking until the main road sweeps to the right and is intersected by Heath Road / York Road. Cross over the road and down walk down a little cobbled street called Water Lane and there'll be quite a few pubs down on the water front.

as others have said..........there is loads to do.

I liked Twickenham so much for the rugby, I moved to here.

Out of station, turn right.......and you have the rough and ready temporary stuff towards the stadium.

If you turn left out of station, and walk down the high street, you'll see the main Rugby type pubs that are full of supporters (proper full).

They are all good fun, but mental busy. I'm talking Cabbage Path, London Road, William Webb Ellis etc

The locals tend to go a bit further down the road to the river, The Barmy Arms, The Fox (street on left in Parallel to the river) which includes the Eel Pie and also one street over is the Bear.

All cracking pubs.

There are others, which locals go to.......a bit out of the way, but i'll keep those off the forum as we like them without 1000s of hammered singing tourists biggrin

Don't forget though, if you turn left out of station, walk down the high street, you can turn right at the bottom and walk along that road too........they have the Kings, (my official local) which is never too busy compared to the Cabbage Patch, Webb Ellis etc. I can walk to Stadium in under 20mins (sober) from there.

Oh, nearly forget - 'The Albany' is good too, opposite the station, but on the level below so you have to walk down the steps to get to it.

My estate agent reckoned there are 30 curry houses too..................not sure if that's true but I recommend the one if you follow right the main road at the bottom past the Web Ellis. It's been curry house of the year last few years. Worth it for the poppadom dips alone.

Finally - if you want to do something slightly different Richmond is a lovely place, and about 5 mins by train towards central London from Twick. My personal recommendation is the 'Pigs Ears'

look it up, not easy to spot as it's underground - but the choice of Ciders is awesome, roast on a Sunday nice too.

Cabbage Patch. Don't expect a table but a good giggle beforehand.

oh, finally Op - not sure of age, and who you're taking..........but if you want an 'experience'

head back to the Barmy Arms after the match.........it's the closest I've ever come to a proper crazy ski bar in the UK.

Everyone dancing on tables, loud music, outside bars and BBQ

A truly epic place (and my other local) - if you are :

A: in the mood (very important!)
B: not worried about people being so totally wasted they may die or propose marriage to you, and everything in between

Remember this, allow at least 2 hours (pessimistic) to get on the train unless you leave midway through the 2nd half. So take the time, go to a pub and enjoy.

absolutely - it is a nightmare on trains........there are literally loads of nice pubs after the game.

before I lived in TW1 - I've been known to walk to Richmond, via pub crawl.......it's only 1.5 miles on foot.
