Mods will move it if they don't like it. What do you want to know?

I want to start coarse fishing again after 20 years out.
I have a few pals who fish for carp only but just to sit at a lake or river and see what comes along is more my thing.

Fishing tackle like everything else has changed in 20 years and from the odd programme I have caught on the box,so has the thinking behind it,more involved and precise than it used to be.
I just wanted some advise on what to avoid, what is genuinely worth having and what brands?
I don`t mind a bit of faffing but I don`t wish to turn it into a science,if you get my drift.

I have just bought a Nash indulgence bed/chair(slept on that bugger alreadybiggrin),a trolley and all the comfort gear, clothing, cooking equipment and so on.
I need some tackle,a bit back to front maybe but I bought those on the collectively assured advice of my carp fishing pals and comfort is comfort what ever you are doing.
When it comes to tackle they disagree completely.

The same stuff that always used to work still does work. You can still buy a 13 foot float rod and a small fixed spool reel and float fish maggots for whatever comes along!

The carp fishing mania is annoying to people who still like traditional fishing - it's not so much the bivvy boys, I sometimes fish for tench with a couple of rods on alarms, etc, it's the need to fill every water with thousands of little carp to provide easy fishing.

You need to tell us what you want to catch, what sort of fishing you like doing and how much time you want to put in.

It sounds like you are gearing up for session angling, which is fine but its not a great way back into the sport as its generally the most time you can put in for the least amount of time with a fish on your line.

Personally, I do short sessions, 4 hours is a long one for me, but I can get 3-4 5-6lb tench in 3 hours at the right time of the year. I can also do Pike, Chub and Barble in that time scale with no problem and at a really minimul cost with really simple tackle and bait.

I had a 12lb Barbel this year freelining, just a rod, a hook, some bits (unhooking etc etc) and a net. Lump of lunchion meat on the hook, just wandering from spot to spot on the river for the last hour before it gets dark.
