Not sure if this is the right forum, but I have been tasked with finding a pair as a Christmas present for an 11 year old. I know nothing about horse riding and even less about Jodhpurs. I only got the job simply because "I am good at finding things on the internet".

So, any advice on brands, what to look for, or where to buy from?. There was no budget mentioned, but from what I have found so far, they don't seem inordinately expensive so would like to get the best possible quality without going down the custom/bespoke route (surprise Christmas gift).

Thanks.

Derby house have a good website, they accept returns if they don't fit

Brands recommended for an eleven yr old Caldene or Derby House own brand ca £30, going up market Mark Todd or Musto ca. £50

Any local saddlery will sell a range of Jodphurs just google to find one

You'll need to know the girl's size for a start biggrin and she will grow.
I'd suggest going to the local saddlery with the girl as a special treat before Christmas - have the jodpurs fitted - and I'm sure they'll be loads of other stuff there that she so desperately needs and you can buy one of those later as a surprise.

Thanks for the replies, I was beginning to wonder if horse riding was a sport and I had posted in wrong area. smile

I have seen Caldene on other websites, none on Derby house, but at least I have some direction now. I do know her size and while I agree it would be best for her to try before we buy, it has to be a Christmas surprise.

She also mentioned wanting a whip, think I will tackle the trousers before entering that minefield.

The whip is a lot cheaper. I used to ride horses when I was young and ill fitting jodpurs - looked like bingo wings but of the jodpur round the thighs variety. Of course, we were only interested in the horses but I did wonder why I'd got all this excess material that wasn't doing anything. Certainly didn't look flattering.

Buy her the whip and the boots as the present - but please let her choose the jodpurs.

She has the boots (and helmet, gloves) already. The whip I will get anyway as they are so cheap. The jodhpurs have been mandated, nothing I can do about that. I will try to find a local shop so exchanges, if necessary will be easier. I will ask her Mum to covertly get some measurements to be doubly sure.

Thanks again, the advice is greatly appreciated.

That's good news - btw the whip is usually only hit against the boot as the horse will see the flick of it but it should then hit the boot so as not to cause any harm.

Really pleased to hear that. When she first mentioned the whip I did think it would be used to hit the horse, but she said there was no need to and I got the impression she wanted one because it looked the part.

I will be seeking assurances that it won't be used on the horse before handing it over. thumbup

Oh it certainly does look the part - but no, it should be used against the side of her riding boot. Young girls love horses so I'm sure she knows that.
