I'm off to Iceland in early March, which Im told could be anywhere between 5c and -10c (more with windchill). We will be doing a few activities, such as glacier walks and lots of general outdoors sightseeing.

Im planning on basically wearing ski trousers when its super cold, with decent jackets. But it strikes me that the key to being warm is some decent thermals.

So, what should we buy? I have seen woolen ones which say you can wash them less and they wont smell - is this the way to go, rather than buying a few cheaper sets as they (I assume) will get smelly.

Any tips?

Light, water/wind proof top layer with multiple layers underneath gives you maximum flexibilty.

Under Armour Cold Gear are great as a base layer. But as above, layer up.

Icebreaker Merino stuff. I've used it down to -28. It doesn't get smelly either.

+1 for Icebreaker. Well worth the money. Also consider Patagonia Capeline, worn for 1 week and didn't smell.

Don't be tempted with synthetic materials, they stink after 1 hr
