As much as I'd like to get into golf 'proper', for now I think thrashing a few balls at my local driving range would be good.

How should I approach this? What club should I get to benefit my time with a bucket of balls? Any input or pointers appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I would start off with a driver and a 7 iron but you should be able to borrow/test them at most driving ranges to see how you get on before you outlay any money.

A driver is a difficult club to hit. If you want to clout some balls some distance then a 3 wood is much easier.

If you want to start to get a half decent swing working then leave the long clubs alone & work with a 7 iron (& maybe a 5) & just hit hundreds & hundreds of balls. If you are new to it then a couple of lessons to set you on the right path would be a good investment - its difficult to "unlearn" bad habits, much better to just build a good swing in the first place!

Thanks chaps. I'll pop down my local range later I think and investigate some more.

A decent hybrid club will be very easy to start with and get you some distance for when you just want to tt it after a rough day. If you start with irons I'd get a couple of lessons just to get you into the sw... you get the idea.

Don't be too concerned with distance either - most range balls are limited distance balls so concentrate on direction to begin with

One club, 7 iron and get a lesson before you even hold the club, get the basics right.

I spent years grooming my faulty golf swing and could only get so far, 12.0hcp.

Spend a few months just on one club with a proper swing and it will benefit you in the long term, and no don't try to hit it further than the next guy at the range, aims for the targets....
