I recently went clay pigeon shooting and really emjoyed it, the insructor said I had a natural ability as well as I hit circa 75% of the clays. Other then messing about on friends farms when I was younger this is all the shooting I have done.

Basically I'd like to get a bit more involved and am considering getting a shotgun licence. Can anyone give me some tips on how to get started or any places I can go? I live in The New Forest so there must be some places to get started?

Thanks

Rufus

Not that up on the New Forest but try looking in one of your local towns for a smallish gunsmiths, the type of shop where the chaps will be happy to give you the time of day; this will be a good place to get started. (The clay place might be able to put you in touch with one if it was local?)

Some people around me advertise their shoots on http://www.gunsonpegs.com/shooting/buy/index.php which might be of use.

Oh and just one piece of concrete advice from me; side-by-side or nothing.

Find your local clay pigeon shooting club and go for a few lessons..

If you feel you have definately go the bug then next step is to apply for your shotgun certificate and 3 months later if you are deemed to be a responsible member of society you can go out and get your own gun and shoot as many clays as you like!.. Or can afford!..

Ive been shooting for 11 years and just wish I had more time to do it!

If you are in Hampshire applying for a new shotguns license, expect to wait about a year.

Applying for a new shotgun licence isn't too difficult, just get the form from the police station. There's a list of 'appropriate' people that are acceptable to countersign your application, eg teachers, doctors, magistrates etc but you can get a responsible person to sign and enclose a letter saying you dont know anyone from the list. They must sign to say they've known you for at least 2yrs and know no reason why you shouldn't have a licence.
As long as you've got no history of mental illness, depression, and no criminal record you should be ok. Remember its your right to have a shotgun licence, the police must have reason not to grant it. Whereas for a firearms certificate (for rifles etc) you have to provide reason why you should have one.
In the meantime buy yourself a gun cabinet (about £150 for one big enough for 2 or 3 guns), get it secured somewhere in your property that's out of view of casual visitors. The police will come round to check your security arrangements before granting a licence. I've had a licence for 16yrs.

I really want to do this. How much are lessons usually? Anyone know of anywhere in Yorkshire?

At Bisley, 1 on 1 lessons are around £125 an hour (including gun and shells if you need a gun).

Surely an exaggeration. 12 weeks is more like it.

I wrote that correctly - it's because of personal experience recently. As in within the last year.

Re-apply? Or brand new? My experience isn't unknown - my shooting club are well aware of this problem. Surrey are known to turn it around inside a week...

Presumably you have to apply to the force where you're resident?

You can still get a license even with a criminal record if it isn't recent, a gun safe is a lot cheaper than £150 I've a 3 gun safe up for £30 before. And a few bigger ones for similar prices eBay is good for them.
