The lengthy England tour to India starts soon with the first test match on the 15th Nov.

4 test matches, 2 T20s and 5 odis taking us up to the end of Jan (albeit with a break between the tests and limited overs stuff).

Both sides have a lot to prove after an up and down year or two.

Will be another test of spin imo and England will have to play it a hell of a lot better than they did against Pakistan if they want to compete here.

I think England will struggle to avoid innings defeats in all 4 tests, going by their recent form against spin....and their lack of a strong spinning attack themselves. frown

England HAVE to play good against their spin or they might as well not bother to go to India in the first place. Why do they struggle against spin?

I suspect we've got too much into the mindset of sweeping rather than playing the ball on it's merits.

I know not why this is, or how we've got there, but until we learn just to play it late, either going forwards or back then we'll struggle. Too much thought and not enough JFDI perhaps

Not long to go now.

Bad news for England with Steven Finn set to miss the 1st test (according to the beeb) with Bresnan or Onions likely to take his place.

Can't risk him. No point in aggravating it. Not a massive problem, the key wickets will come from spin, that is the key and Patel has played really well and will probably get in ahead of Panesar. I just think that you need your best spinners in the side and Panesar will get more important wickets than Patel. Patel however has batted extremely well and is likely to keep Monty out. We need 20 wickets per game and I'm not sure leaving out Monty will deliver that. First Test we will pack the batting I have no doubt..

If we had another quality spinner to compliment Swanny then maybe it would be more fun..

Madness he's not in the side. Our selectors are too fking stubborn about our 'shape'.

I'd have been inclined to include Monty - Especially with Bresnan in the side for Finn. It would mean Broad batting at 7 of course which is probably why the selectors stuck with Patel, who admittedly, has done well in the warm-up matches.

Gonna be a tough tour...

I think they are paranoid about our batting. Monty is an old fashioned cricketer good bowler st batsman. Coaches don't like 'em. If he can't bowl on these wickets where would you bowl him?

He can bowl on these wickets. I'd pick a team which stands the best chance of taking 20 wickets and winning a test/the series. And if he doesn't get picked for a home series then so be it.

I think with Monty though it is also the poor fielding.

Mind the rest have dropped plenty of catches today. Decent perfomance to get 4 down, Hopefully we can get them under 500.

Yep with you on that. Pick your best bowlers and your batsmen have to perform instead of bowlers who can bat like Patel. It's particularly relevant on these wickets on the 4th/5th day. India will have those spinners in their armoury.

True, and in the one day game it is crucial. Give me a guy who can help me get 20 wickets though and I will put up with one or two fielding lapses. He is pretty comical in the field, but he does try, the crowds love him ;-)

As England have nothing to defend or fight over, Id have gone with all out attack for this series. I know Im the one who usually advocates playing the long game, but I think this series represents something of a freeby for England. The team isnt really expected to win the series, the long streak and reputation of the last 3 yrs or so is now broken, new players coming in, so why not go and give it some? Monty and Swann in and told to attack, attack, attack.

You do not get the chance to experiment with no stress too often in test cricket, I think this series is a chance.
