... is apparently an Olympic sport.

Apart from being a superb perving opportunity, why the hell is this in? How can anybody claim it to be a sport practiced by elite athletes?

If we ditched that crap we could run a few more proper sports instead... bring back the track cycling endurance stuff or something.

"Faster, higher, stronger". My arse. rolleyes

The same could be said for mountain biking.

An Olympic sport? I think not. I would rather watch totty in swimming customers rather than sweaty women in Lycra!!!

Really, didn't you hear Boardmen comparing it to the other cycling events? He reckons it's probably the hardest event out of all of them.

There are a few events that I wonder about but they are very fit, very strong and train together for hrs per week. They make it look very easy. I still don't like it though!

I have just watched the biking & I wasn't in anyway critiscing the riders or the effort that they put in - they all looked knackered at the end of the race. My point, not very well made at all, was that i just don't think it's an Olympic sport.

In no way was I slagging off the riders. I couldn't do that for 9 minutes let alone 90!!!

There was a thread about this last week. It may not be to everyone's taste, but from what I can see it's bloody hard work launching yourself around a swimming pool doing complex moves whilst holding your breath.

Unless the IOC says otherwise i think they deserve recognition for their efforts - if you don't like it, don't watch (I don't like track cycling, it bores me silly) but I would never rule something out having not tried to see how easy, or otherwise, it is.

I thought that the MTB did look like a proper sport - has 321 Go, first across the line wins, need to be very fit, opportunity to overtake, 99% down to skill and fitness. What's not to qualify it?

Synch Swim? Well if you take that out because it's decided on points not who's first you also have to take out lots of gymnastics, boxing/Judo Taekwondo, diving, horse prancing etc and the Ice Skating in the winter Olymps.

Although I don't particularly favour the judged on points things I just think Why not, lots of people do them and enjoy them, they're not doing me any harm so lets leave them alone!

I'm a bit dubious about any 'opinion' sport. Synchronised drowning, Ice Skating, diving, etc. Mountain biking is a straight race. Fastest wins.

If the aim is to go higher, faster or stronger, then I think it's pretty reasonable for it to be an Olympic discipline. So BMX, mountain biking, canoe sprint, slalom... all makes sense to me.

If it's to make pretty patterns... just, nah. It doesn't mean I don't think they work hard, and it certainly doesn't mean I don't recognise that it's a difficult and skilled thing to do, but I profoundly doubt its place in an Olympic games.

What about diving? All have to go the same speed. All jump from the same height and whilst strength counts it's timing and athleticism that really counts, it is also an established Olympic sport.

I do know what you mean though, however I think it is hard to draw the line due to the huge variety of skills shown throughout the games

Diving's a sport? Well that's a new one on me. I'd always assumed it was part of the BBC's manifesto to offer content for all viewers; in this case, elderly homosexual men.

at least the syncro girls are fit - some of shooting events have more in common with darts.

Synch swimming acually looks quite hard to do from a technical viewpoint.
