So we don't upset the moderators and go 'off topic' discussing anything controversial on the Olympics thread, I though we could carry on here.

Quite a few interesting topics this Olympiad:

Badminton players disqualified

GB Cyclist admitting cheating after winning a gold medal

VP / Mears issue in the pursuit final

runner kicked out for not trying n the 800m and then reinstated

Considering how many events there are, not been all that many issues really - though I reckon I've missed a few.

Yeah forgot that one.

Maybe he wasn't using the sponsor's condoms...

Its not that hard to follow team rules for 2 weeks is it?

Guardian says:

A statement for the committee said: "Mr. Collins departure is down to his repeated absences from training sessions and also for refusing to respond to repeated phone calls and emails by team manager and coaches. Furthermore, Mr. Collins did not make an appearance for registration for his events at the Olympic Village [on Friday] as requested."

Some dodgy scoring and decisions in the Boxing, I don't really know much about Boxing, the associations and what the deal is with what's happened previously (http://www.nbcolympics.com/news-blogs/boxing/judges-under-fire-amid-fix-claims.html end of article), there's lots of talk about it in the Olympic Boxing thread.

GB win first ever dressage medal, and it happens to be a gold and it happens to be in London...

To be fair, the Germans ( who have won the last 7 times apparently) did have an error in this bewildering 'sport', so maybe the GB team had a good day. Sounds statistically like the 'home team advantage' we hear so much about.

From what Ive been told (MiL is big into horses, fnar , fnar, etc) its down to 2 things: 1. The Germans bought a £10m horse 18 months ago, the most expensive dressage/comp horse ever and then just before the Olmpics, its rider came down the glandular fever I think, so their big hotshot went out. Secondly the British bird and her horse are currently the No 1 in the world and on fire.

More bad luck than anything for the Germans with their wonder-horse/rider combo.

GB missing out on a gold in one of the 2-men rowing events because they weren't allowed to choose their lane despite winning the semi-final. They were given one of the more wind-effected lanes and narrowly missed out on gold.

Strangely, after that the rules were changed back to normal...

Actually, the one that is really sticking in my mind is the South Korean fencer Shin A Lam, and her sit-down protest. The talk at the time was that the reason the clock hadn't been run down properly was because the time-keeper was a 15 year old girl. From what I can see, this hasn't been reported in any UK sources, but is all over the international reports. Obviously I have no idea if it's true or not, but it does seem a bit odd that someone so young might have been in such a position of influence. Cue people telling me it's bks smile

Aaron Cook - World No 1 (-80kg) at Taekwondo not allowed to the Olympics becuse he trained on his own and not dictated by the british governening body (even self funded too). Replaced by someone ranked 59!

redcard

You realise that comment makes you sound French don't you?

For the record, GB provide the venue; the "horse poncing about" federation provide the judges, officials etc.; they decide who wins, not Boris or Lord Coe

I believe some wealthy British individuals put their hands in their pockets to buy some decent horses for London 2012, so perhaps no surprise that we did much better this time around.

How did his replacement get on?

Also the 1500m men's winner, Taoufik Makhloufi was damned by faint praise from Brendon Foster this morning on TV. He got as close to calling the chap a cheat as he possibly could. Calling the race "unusual", Makhloufi's performance "unexpected" and saying that the Olympic flame had "dimmed slightly" after that particular race.

there was a bit of controversy in the mens hockey last night, GB v spain - ultimately proved correct but spiced things up ahead of GB v Argies in the womenss versions today.

VP clearly nudged by anna mears yesterday in the sprint final....

PS did anyone watch teh mens 1500 metres final last night and think like we did "something doesn't feel quite right about this...."???? notwithstanding his "injury" in the 800m the previous day....

I wonder if anybody will be asking his doctor questions about this mystery injury that stopped him from running the 800m properly but miraculously cleared up and allowed him to run the race of his life yesterday.

It happens all the time though. Loads of people are too sick to come into work on a Monday & then rock up on Tuesday morning looking fresh as a daisy. It must be a special kind of sickness that only a few doctors can pick up on and really Debilitates for a maximum of 24 hours.....

I understand it is a bit more complicated, as the man ranked 59, had just come down from a higher weight division where he was very good. But was having to climb his way up the rankings in the new one

I thought Evans' victory in the boxing yesterday was decidedly iffy. I really thought the Canadian Clayton had done enough to win.
