So who do you think should light the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony?

The 2 front runners seem to be Daly Thompson or Sir Steve Redgrave.

I think it would be nice to use someone from an older generation.

Sir Roger Banister, obviously famous for doing the first sub 4minute mile, but never won a medal at the Olympics.

Or even older still, how about the oldest surviving GB (man and women) medal winners. Probably no moving pictures of their achievement, and probably only a couple of paragraphs in the newspapers.

I think that given Hoy is carrying the flag then Redgrave is a shoe in for lighting the flame...

I vote for the military using a roof top missile.. something different for the opening ceremony and would make the military feel more involved in the games rather than just security

Redgrave to light it and get Thompson to do ten other tasks, all of which he does ok...but none really great.

Somebody worthy of such an honour. Not a pampered pet like Mr Beckham or these other sports people who are being suggested.

How about someone like Ben Parkinson the soldier who was so badly injured in Afghanistan.

That would be a good thing for the organisers to do however I doubt that it will happen which is a great pity.

I'm sure her PR people have tried! Probably pushing for her to do it wearing as little as possible (while holding a random assortment of sponsors products)

I hope it's someone who has participated and won Olympic medals. I just hope it's in no way a political figure!

If we cant find someone who is a past Olympian then we might as well have the McDonalds boss go and light it.

This would be great - remove some of the "clutter" thats spinning around the Olympics at the moment and focus on the actual Olympic ideal (obviously will never happen for that very reason....)

This. Why the hell do people want Beckham to do it, he's never been an Olympian so shouldn't even be considered.

Redgrave for me

What, a showpony rather than a thoroughbred sportsman?

Redgrave has real achievements on his record. Beckham has almost nothing. He certainly has no international honours whatsoever.

i doubt Wiggo will even be at the ceremony to be honest, the mens road race is the next day so i'd be surprised if they want him loafing around with the flame rather than getting a good nights rest...

I'd like it to be someone like Adrian Moorhouse personally.

Pity about the road race the next day, Wiggins would have been perfect for lighting the flame (even though he already has had arm burnt this month).

In Wiggos absence I propose John Terry hehe

Ps only realised that the whole torch/flame thing was a Nazi invention devised for the 1936 event.
