Never played there welshbeef. Do you live in Emmer Green/Sonning Common then? I was always under the impression that RGC was a tough course, could be wrong though. Mapledurham isn't a bad track...
Yep. Have played Mapledurham it's a very flat course and is a short course plus very busy all the time due to the cheap and not limited membership. Caversham Heath is supposed to be good too.
I've played Reading a few times, I used to live near Newbury, it's a good, well established course, it's not too difficult at all for a new golfer and I'd say it's challenging enough for anyone who's not near pro standard.
that said if you're new to the game the golf complex at greys green near Henley probably offers better value for money, it's got more variation of things to do, 9 hole courses for nipping to in week day evenings and good practice facilities, and it may not have the same type of members as some of the other places (you know who you are)
For me the East Berks in Wokingham is the best in that area, but it's probably a bit dear.

Wow thanks. Ive played at the Dog in Sonning many times - a fine course to hack around as a total beginner. But this is literally one field further up !!!that said if you're new to the game the golf complex at greys green near Henley probably offers better value for money, it's got more variation of things to do, 9 hole courses for nipping to in week day evenings and good practice facilities, and it may not have the same type of members as some of the other places (you know who you are)

Great. Am going to do the full 36 holes in a couple of weeks .
I played this course in a University varsity match a few years ago when at Reading Uni and found it to be a little boring (although as i played it in February this may be part of the issue)but it was still far better than our home club, Wokefield Park...
One of the best course I played in the area was Blue Mountain, although i'm not sure of your location.

Sorry scrap that... That is the old Dog course. I've played that probably 20times. Tees and greens were really poor last time I played there some 5 years ago.
Have viewed on the website that they have upgraded the course so fingers crossed.
Also £12.50 for 36 holes... Superb.
I've not been down there for 4 or 5 years, there is a lot of good courses in that area, I've only played the ones I mentioned and the ones around Newbury, but I'd be reluctant to pay membership fees upwards of £1k + signing on fee unless I thought my game was up to it and I'd be playing at least 36 holes a week (I play to ~11+). Infact i couldn't afford it either in time or financially so it might just be sour grapes talking but if it were my choice I'd pick a cheap club where I could practice and get my handicap down, they'll have a society there and i'm sure once or twice a year you'll get treated to a trip around a pucker course to experience how the other half live and it makes it all the more enjoyable.Have viewed on the website that they have upgraded the course so fingers crossed.
