Just saw something on teletext about how Taekwondo GB have nominated someone in a specific category( i think it said 80 kgs) who is rated number 93 in the world over another of our lads who is world rated number 1.

Anyone know the background to this story---seems odd to say the least.

TKD is the dullest sport in the Olympics.

opponents stand there looking at each other for a minute or two, bouncing on toes.

both kick at the same time and usually fall over / make silly noises.

judge calls a point for one of them.

rinse and repeat four times.

and this is from someone who used to do TKD!

I dont have the slightest interest in TKD per se, I was just enquiring about the strange decision to take a world number 93 over the world number 1.

Ahh, politics. The only effective weapon to use against Taekwondo hehe

I wouldn't be surprised if this was the last Olympic outing for TKD, it's been voted against a few times already, and they're anxious to try something else. Last time round saw some boring fighting, terrible decisions. The only highlight was the Cuban fella kicking the Ref in the head.

I've trained in TKD for over 10 years, but in the 'splitters' group who aren't invited to the Olympics...

There was something on this on the local news.

Showed a guy in white kicking a bag of some kind 4 times in the blink of an eye then resting his foot on the head of it.

I thought fking hell that's impressive. I don't normally rate TKD but this kids was Sharpe.

Anyway then they said he's world number 1. Ahh that explains it

Then wait what? they are picking a guy who is going to lose because this guy built his own dojo in his garden WTF?

Thing is, I don't know anything about Taekwondo, but after reading this, I'm even more confused:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/18293446

At the bottom of the report Sarah Stevenson is quoted as saying:

Stevenson said: "To be world number one on a rankings system is not what taekwondo is, it doesn't mean you're the best in the world.

"I don't even care or know what ranking I am, and people need to realise this. It's really unfair that GB Taekwondo are getting criticised for not picking a world number one.

"It's numbers on a list, it's not tennis, it's taekwondo and I am really passionate about that."

I don't understand how/why you would have a rankings system where the person who won the World Championships and is number 1 on the rankings list, is NOT the best in the World as she suggests.

What is the point in the ranking system and how is it determined then, if it isn't showing who is the best in the World?

Maybe me of the links says this but isn't it down to interpretation of the rules.

Somebody who is really good is know for a head kick. And head kicks used I be allowed but aren't. So the GB team has picked someone who doesn't head kick because they'll not fall foul I the rules. Or something.

I had the misfortune of being involved in the highest level of the martial arts world for many many years.

Every single art is corrupt at the highest level. TKD and Karate (before it imploded and millions of £ of sport england money vanished) are natural bedfellows at the top table of shame.

The whole thing stinks, but is not in the slightest surprising.

Shocking. However, I think a replacement should be easy to find for Teakwondo.

I heard about this at ther weekend and frankly it seems an insane decision. I really feel for this bloke. Not only that, but Muhammed will now also be under more pressure to perform. Regardless of whether its entertaining or not ( I find it a bit dull) the politics in this decision seem crazy.

found this on the GB Taekwondo FB page. : http://www.gbtaekwondo.co.uk/index.php?pagename=ne...

The guy who has been selected was previously very successful at the weight bracket above apparently. He is 93 in the world in the weight category as he has only just dropped down.

It will be interesting to see what happens - and a shame so many will be looking at a young kid like Lutalo with mixed feelings about the selection. With a decision this controversial, if Lutalo performs badly heads will likely roll at GB TKD.
