What is this weird sport I saw?

Last night at my local swimming pool a bunch of people in normal swim gear but wearing mask, snorkel and fins.
2 teams of about 6 in each team would start from both sides of the pool, swim as fast as they could towards the centre and when they got there, they'd dive down to the bottom. Followed by a frenzy and fins/arms going everywhere.
What on earth was I witnessing?
